Free Resource | Does the Bible Promote Tolerance or Intolerance?
One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? According to the Bible, it is an expression of love to discipline your childen, but society is leaning the other way. Think of parenting this way: you're given a rose and your task is to prune it to make it the best rose it can be. But you're not trying to change the rose into a lily. Don't try to force them into a particular mold, but discover who they've been made to be by God.

It's important to study the Bible because we need to hear what it says. God's mind is bigger than ours. We tend to think of peacefulness as something passive. The truth is, in order to have peace we need to let it rule, and that is something quite active. We need to actively guard our minds and hearts in order to experience the promise of the peace of Christ in practice.

The more holy we are, the less judgmental we will become. Humility is key to holiness so we don't display religious pride. The roadmap on how to be holy is to become like Christ.

Sometimes people think that holiness is very strange—the more holy you get, the more odd you become. As we are renewed in the image of our Creator, the truly holy person is becoming more and more normal—who they were meant to be.

When you become a Christian, you are given a new nature. It is not natural for our new selves to lie because we are no longer like that. We have switched so that it is natural to tell the truth. But we still have a battle within us with our old nature.

As we are transformed by the renewing of our minds, we become fixed in a good way with clear thoughts and our affections connected to truth—it transforms who we are. Then we shine brighter as a light to those around us.

The journey to security is like that moment when a child is tossed up in the air by his exuberant dad. We are caught up between the panic of being thrown in the air and the excitement of trusting. We can look forward to being caught, secure in God's presence.
