Beyond Tolerance #5

January 8, 2020

We want to be tolerant, but there are so many things we should not tolerate. If someone is practicing self-harm, it is not loving to ignore that; it's loving to confront that. The line between love and truth can become blurred, but the Bible has a healthy way of looking at these two things.

One group says the Bible is a book about love, mercy, and kindness. They think of the story of the Good Samaritan and of Jesus telling us to turn the other cheek. So how could anyone think the Bible prevents a tolerant society? But for another group, the Bible is far from tolerant. There’s the conquest of Canaan. There’s Elijah killing Baal’s prophets by his own hand. And in the New Testament, Jesus talks often about hell. That’s not tolerant. What then can we say in answer to this question? We're not perfect, but if we're not purifying ourselves and if our lifestyles are not on the path toward righteousness, then we cannot hide behind a profession of faith. A profession of faith without a practice of faith is in fact a characteristic of children of the devil.

You are Christians with the annointing from the Holy One Himself, and you don't need anything in addition to that. John is grounding us in the foundational truths of Christ and who He is. This helps us be discerning when we come across false teaching.

There's no truly good deed done if it's not done for God's glory, because someone has to get the focus and praise. We are made to give glory to something or someone.

Your sins, if you've come to Jesus and made a profession of faith and been filled with His Spirit, are covered, past, present, and future. But as a child of God, in order to enjoy His presence, you need to keep short accounts. God is light; He is utterly pure, and He is holy.

John is not just saying that it's really healthy for you spiritually to go to church and Bible study, although that's true. He says it's inevitable that if you have fellowship with God, you will want to have fellowship with other people. True Christians are a part of God's family, and they will want to be with God's family in church.

People can publically criticize Christian truth because they have the freedom that a biblical revelation contextualized in our society has given them. Try making the same religious criticisms about Islam in a Muslim country! But we must go beyond tolerance to love.

Wise Christians do not go on legalistic religious rants on social media, leaving people feeling guilty. They do not dump theological truth on discussion threads with their friends, burying them in an avalanche of spiritual jargon.

We live in the "age of outrage" where we are constantly angry at our leaders and offended at what they say. On top of this is the long-lasting devaluation of the role of pastor in our increasingly secular society. How should Christians relate to this changing culture?

We're all made in the image of God, which means we're all built to worship. But do we worship God, or career, money, or nature?

Perhaps you are in a very difficult family or work situation. Often during the holidays we reach a breaking point and are not sure we can take it any more. How do we make sure we are the same person in church, at home, and at work? How do we honor Christ in every situation?
