Welcoming Your Neighbors

August 22, 2018

Rosaria Butterfield and her husband, Kent, wanted to get to know their neighbors when they moved into their new neighborhood. So they moved the grill and picnic table into the front yard, and now it's become a favorite meeting place for friends and neighbors alike. Butterfield illustrates how she practices radical hospitality, caring for her neighbors, welcoming the stranger, and loving the lonely. By doing this, she explains, we can live out the gospel in front of others and build relationships, and hopefully see others come to Christ.

Wife and mom Rosaria Butterfield talks about practicing radical ordinary hospitality as a way to live out the gospel. It's not always practical or sensible, and opening up your home to soothe and serve the lost will cost you something, but the blessings are unfathomable. Jesus is alive, and our neighbors are image-bearers of a holy God even if they don't know Him yet. Butterfield reminds us that hospitality isn't just an event that you do when the cat hair is off the couch and you've swept the floor, but our homes are the places where we can take the church to the people.

Author Rosaria Butterfield illustrates how "radically ordinary hospitality" can be a bridge for bringing the gospel to lost friends and neighbors--something she experienced herself on her own faith journey. She tells how she and her family befriended her former neighbor, Hank, and recalls how a couple reached out to her years earlier when she was a lesbian activist teaching at Syracuse University. Butterfield reminds listeners that real hospitality involves open invitations to your home and seeking out strangers with the love of Christ.

Brooke McGlothlin, author of "The Gospel Centered Mom," dispels the myths of the ME gospel: "God is all about meeting my needs, wants and desires." Nancy Pearcey, a professor and scholar in residence at Houston Baptist University, reflects on the value of human life. Our culture has a low view of human life and the body, but God created the bod,y and therefore, it is good. Pearcey explains how the culture's worldview has influenced our thinking on abortion and euthanasia.
August 10, 2018
Best-selling author Nancy Pearcey contrasts the secular view of the body with Scripture's view. The cultural or post-modern view influences how we think about abortion, homosexuality, and bioethics. In these arenas, science has usurped authority that Christians say is God's. This low view of the body, Nancy explains, is also responsible for the hook-up culture so often practiced on college campuses. Unfortunately, these worldviews are also infiltrating the Christian church. Pearcey coaches parents on helping their children think biblically.
