Understanding Mental Illness

June 25, 2018

Matthew Stanford, CEO of the Hope and Healing Center & Institute in Houston, Texas, believes if Christians want to help those struggling with mental disorders, they have to understand what they are. Stanford explains we are all broken to some degree due to original sin, and we need to treat those affected by mental illness with the same compassion and respect as those battling cancer or any other illness. Mental disorders are a combination of biology and environment, like prenatal care, and those with them have the same spiritual needs as anyone else.

You were meant to bloom! Businessman Jack Alexander, a former recipient of an Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year Award, reminds us that God can and will provide all our needs especially if we put Him first in our lives. Just as Jesus fed the 5,000 by taking the bread, looking toward heaven, and blessing it, we also can consecrate what we have by offering our all to the Lord, whether that be our tithe, our children, or our talents.

Businessman Jack Alexander believes that each person always has something to give, if not financially, then through their time and talents. Alexander, who grew up in a family where resources were scarce, tells how he came to faith in Christ in Australia while he was on a business trip, and how believing in the God of abundance changed his life. Alexander cautions listeners to avoid capacity killers like debt, porn, drugs and alcohol and to lean into God, who sees a forest in one tiny seed.

Jonathan and Wynter Pitts want their four daughters not to be afraid of the world. That's why they are grounding them in the truth of God's Word. The Pitts realize that if their girls believe the Bible is true and live it out, they will be marginalized by the world. So they are preparing them to suffer by teaching them to lean on the Holy Spirit. They share how their parents modeled a love and enthusiasm for sharing the gospel with others, and what they are doing as a family to do the same.

Jonathan and Wynter Pitts know what it's like to raise girls. They have four of them! How do they nurture their relationships? Jonathan admits that he loves including the girls in his world, whether he's at work or going to Home Depot. Wynter, on the other hand, most likes to enjoy time with them snuggling on the couch. Either way, the Pitts encourage parents to get to know their children's personalities and preferences so they can best encourage their interests and talents.

Pastor Todd Wilson, a husband for over 20 years and father to seven, tells how he's raising his children to know what a biblical marriage is like. Wilson takes listeners back to the first marriage of Adam and Eve and explains how everything related to sexual ethics comes out of that one-flesh concept. Todd reveals why waiting to have sex until marriage is a wise move.

Why did God make two genders rather than, say, seven? Pastor Todd Wilson, author of "Mere Sexuality," points listeners back to Jesus to talk about sexuality. Wilson reminds us that Jesus came to earth as a male and will continue for all eternity as a male. Christians should celebrate being the male or female they were created to be and not bow to their desires to be someone they aren't.
June 12, 2018
Pastor Todd Wilson talks about God's design for sexuality. Wilson challenges listeners to consider what God was doing when He intentionally created humans male and female. Wilson tells how he would tutor his own seven children on sexuality and help them relate to people who don't share their same views.
