Dave and Ann Wilson

Transitions

February 26, 2019

There's great value in remembering where you've come from. Dave and Ann share what the Raineys have taught them about marriage through their example, as well as their teaching. Ann's biggest takeaway from the Rainey's life is a great marriage is one that puts the marriage before the children. She shares how they've tried to put that principle into practice. Dave tells what he's learned about making your spouse your main disciple.

Dave and Ann Wilson talk to Dennis and Barbara Rainey about what they've learned about marriage through the years. The Wilsons, who joined FamilyLife's speaker team more than 30 years ago and serve at Kensington Church in Detroit, talk about attending a Weekend to Remember marriage getaway just two weeks before their wedding. Together they share how Dennis and Barbara have mentored them throughout the seasons of life.

Dennis and Barbara Rainey believe that children are meant to be received with joy, intentionally raised and then released. Although releasing typically happens after high school, it actually begins bit by bit when children are babies, beginning with feeding and dressing themselves, starting school, and getting their first job. The Raineys remind us that a parent’s assignment is to receive their arrow, aim them high, and release them.

Dennis and Barbara Rainey believe parents should give their children a sense of mission as it relates to Ephesians 2:10, “For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works.” To do this, parents must first evaluate whether they are living for Christ. It’s only then that they can help their children identify their gifts and help them think through how they might serve Christ.

Dave and Ann Wilson, parents of three grown children, want couples to know that when they draw closer to God, they will become closer to their spouses emotionally and sexually. Ann, who has led a bible study for the wives of the Detroit Lions for 30+ years, remembers one time when she encouraged a wife to surprise her husband on their anniversary by treating herself to some new lingerie. The wife later revealed that it was the best night of their relationship. The Wilsons tell how past sexual experiences can affect a husband or wife's current sex life.

Pastor Dave Wilson and his wife, Ann, talk with Dennis and Barbara Rainey about marital conflict. The Wilsons admit that they had a lot to learn about conflict when they got married. Ann's family background included loud fights, which was a far contrast from Dave, who learned at an early age not to rock the boat. Together they share what they've learned over the years about the finer points of conflict.

Dave and Ann Wilson, authors of the book, "Vertical Marriage," look back on a turning point in their marriage. They had two children, Dave was starting a church, and he served as a chaplain for the Detroit Lions. Ministry demands occupied all of his time and Ann was feeling the strain of his absence. Dave takes us back to his big wake up call, and together they share what they did to get their marriage back on track.

Kristen Jenson, the founder of a website dedicated to helping parents empower their kids to reject pornography, talks to parents about the dangers of porn. Jenson has written a book called, "Good Pictures, Bad Pictures," and reminds parents that age seven is the average age of exposure. Through her book, Jenson helps parents teach children what porn is and what children should do when they encounter it.

Pornography is an epidemic in our country. Kristen Jenson, author of the Good Pictures, Bad Pictures series of read-aloud books, joins Dennis Rainey to talk about porn-proofing your children. Jenson remembers a phone call she received from a desperate mom whose teen had been sexually molesting his younger siblings after viewing porn. Jenson wanted to help so she created a book that parents can read to their children to warn them about the dangers of porn.

Crawford and Karen Loritts share how they've learned to leverage their distinctive differences to make their marriage stronger. Crawford praises Karen's organizational and money management skills now, but he was slow to appreciate those skills early on. Crawford, on the other hand, excels at casting a vision for their future. Together they remind us that the goal of marriage isn't to change one another but to press into Jesus and accept the differences.

Weekend to Remember conference speakers Crawford and Karen Loritts remind listeners that all marriages have storms, but those storms don't have to be the end of hope to those who are anchored in Christ. The Lorittses remember storms they've weathered, including the loss of their baby years ago, and Karen tells how the empty nest syndrome hit her hard once their four children left home. The goal of marriage isn't to be stress free, but to tell the truth about our Savior.
