The Joy of Being a Grandparent

July 28, 2020

There are magical, special feelings that come with being a grandparent. The fun of learning what your grandchildren will call you (papa, mimi, "G-daddy"). Inviting your grandkids for sleepovers. Reading books slowly and not skipping words like you did as a young parent. Connecting with each grandchild uniquely, and leaving a spiritual legacy for when you are gone. Mary Larmoyeux, author of the book One-of-a-Kind Grandparent Connection, explains the lasting value of grandparents.

God has designed faith to be passed down from generation to generation. Mary Larmoyeux shares her wisdom as "Nana" on how to make connections with grandchildren. A grandparent, Mary explains, knows how fast time goes by and why it's therefore so natural for grandparents to slow things down and enjoy every moment. Grandparents see things from a different perspective than when they were in the thick of the busy, day-to-day life of parenting.

Pastor Sam Crabtree, a father of two daughters and six grandchildren, offers parents practical help for raising young children. Crabtree explains why boundaries are good and tells parents that if they set rules they don't enforce, it teaches children to disregard what they're saying. Crabtree reminds parents that issues only get bigger once the kids are older, so they need to address the issues as soon as they see them.

Crabtree emphasizes that parents must mean what they say and be consistent with the boundaries they set. He also explains why disciplining a child with loving correction will gain a child’s heart in the long run.

Do you and your spouse fight about money? Do you avoid the topic altogether to dodge a conflict? How do you stack up to other couples in this area? Jeff and Shaunti Feldhahn share discoveries from their research from interviewing thousands of couples and reveal the gender trends behind it all. Believe it or not, both spouses are usually trying to avoid going over a financial cliff - they're just fearing very different cliffs.

Jeff Feldhahn is frugal with money, but his wife Shaunti has no problem spending freely. "FamilyLife Today" hosts Dave and Ann Wilson share this same saver/spender dynamic. Listen as these couples unpack both sides of this equation with real-life marriage examples every couple will relate to. Discover the most common underlying values driving these behaviors as reflected by data-driven research with thousands of couples.

Dave and Ann Wilson talk to Jeff and Shaunti Feldhahn about why couples so often fight about money in marriage. Why would one spouse avoid paying bills until they're delinquent? Why would the other pull Amazon packages off the porch before their spouse sees it? Based on interviews with thousands of couples, the Feldhahns shed light on this and explain why just having conversations about money is the most stressful (but important) part.

If you want to connect with your teens, you have to be available. That's the advice of author Jeffrey Dean. Dean gives parents some practical advice for effectively communicating with their kids. Parents can begin by talking to their kids about the things they like to do or are interested in. Parents can then branch out to more difficult topics. Dean encourages parents to look for opportunities, like driving them to school or dinnertime, to have great conversations.

Teen expert Jeffrey Dean knows that moms and dads each have something unique to bring to the table when it comes to raising spiritually healthy kids. According to Dean, each child is looking for authenticity. They want to know if Christianity connects to the real world. Dean tells moms and dads how they can help their kids know that God's Word is still applicable today.

Jeffrey Dean, author of the book, "Raising Successful Teens," knows that raising a successful teen is less about perfection and more about pursuit. Encouraging your kids to make good grades, get into a good college, and marry well is fine, but Dean says parents should have a bigger goal than that. Dean believes parents should be intentional about raising kids who love the Lord above all else. To see that happen, parents have to recalibrate their definition of success. Step one for parents is to model a faithful, loving walk with Christ themselves.

College pastor Shelby Abbott talks about dating and why the important parts should not happen digitally, including asking for a date. Abbott encourages parents to teach their daughters early on how a boy should treat them by talking to them about dating expectations and even taking them on daddy/daughter dates. As they grow to understand Jesus' love for them, they'll have that example to refer to when they decide who they will date.
