The Desire to Control

May 14, 2020

Shannon Popkin, author of the book "Control Girl," tells how she finally came to realize she had a control issue. Whether getting angry at her husband or losing it with her kids, Popkin acknowledges her anger often stemmed from her need to control the situation and those around her. Dave and Ann Wilson, parents of three grown children, want couples to know that when they draw closer to God, they will become closer to their spouses emotionally and sexually. Ann, who has led a bible study for the wives of the Detroit Lions for 30+ years, remembers one time when she encouraged a wife to surprise her husband on their anniversary by treating herself to some new lingerie. The wife later revealed that it was the best night of their relationship. The Wilsons tell how past sexual experiences can affect a husband's or wife's current sex life.

Pastor Dave Wilson and his wife, Ann, talk with Dennis and Barbara Rainey about marital conflict. The Wilsons admit that they had a lot to learn about conflict when they got married. Ann's family background included loud fights, which was a far contrast from Dave's, who learned at an early age not to rock the boat. Together they share what they've learned over the years about the finer points of conflict.

Dave and Ann Wilson, authors of the book "Vertical Marriage," look back on a turning point in their marriage. At the time, they had two children, Dave was starting a church, and he served as a chaplain for the Detroit Lions. Ministry demands occupied much of his time, and Ann was feeling the strain of his absence. Dave takes us back to his big wake up call, and together they share what they did to get their marriage back on track.

Authors Elyse Fitzpatrick and Eric Schumacher talk about the dignity and value of women. Starting with the definition of femininity, they list strong women of the Bible who broke the stereotype of the timid female and, instead, proved that women of God can be strong. Hear how Fitzpatrick and Schumacher are raising their daughters and sons to embrace their gender and love the person God made them to be.

How has the culture influenced your view of womanhood? Elyse Fitzpatrick, counselor and author of the book "Worthy," is joined by her co-author Eric Schumacher, as she tells how her thoughts of femininity and submission changed through the years. Fitzpatrick assented to the idea of submission, and her easy-going husband made it easy for her to love and respect him. Fitzpatrick tells what submission really is, as Scripture defines it, and coaches wives on how to speak hard things from their hearts without being disrespectful to their husbands.

Authors Elyse Fitzpatrick and Eric Schumacher talk about the role of women in the church. In years past, women were often frowned upon and thought less of than men. Women have made great strides through the years: socially, educationally, and economically. But are women considered equal once they step through the church doors? Fitzpatrick reminds us that women typically comprise 50% or more of most congregations and to overlook their insights and spiritual giftings is to miss a great blessing.

Esther Fleece Allen recalls the pain of being abandoned by both her father and mother when she was young. She tells how God breathed new life into her broken spirit, and later prepared her for her new name and role as a wife when she became Mrs. Allen.

Abandoned by her angry, abusive father when she was young, and eventually by her mother several years later, author Esther Fleece Allen only began to understand what a real, godly family looked like after being taken in by a family at her church. Esther encourages believers to lament their past in order to embrace the new life Christ offers them.

From King David to Susanna Wesley, the faithful have been writing their prayers down for thousands of years. Ever Thine Home founder Barbara Rainy talks about the benefit of getting real and honest with God. At the urging of Dave and Ann Wilson, Rainey shares some of her own prayers, which can be found in her latest release, "My Heart, Ever His."

Barbara Rainey, founder and creator of Ever Thine Home, joins Dave and Ann Wilson to talk about her newest book, "My Heart, Ever His." As a lover of the Psalms, Barbara began to realize the importance of pouring her heart out to the Lord through written prayers. The more vulnerable she allowed herself to be with the Lord, the more she enjoyed it, and the more comfort she received from His presence. Rainey hopes that by sharing these heartfelt prayers with other women, they will be as encouraged and comforted as she has been.
