Standing on the Word

July 13, 2018

Dr. Winfred Neely, senior pastor of Judson Baptist Church in Oak Park, Illinois, recounts how anxious and afraid he and his wife were when their son, Sterling, came down with malaria while they served as missionaries in Africa. They prayed and released their son to the Lord, and soon the Lord restored their son's health. Neely explains how fervent prayer works to bring us peace.

Dr. Winfred Neely, a professor at Moody Bible Institute, shares biblical wisdom for dealing with stress and worry. Neely recalls how his mother found strength to navigate through her worries by leaning into the Scriptures. Neely, an admitted boundary pusher as a kid, remembers the day when a fellow soldier in the Army shared the gospel, and how that moment eventually led him to attend Bible college, and later accept the call to do God's work in Africa.

Who are you pouring into? Authors and professors Barbara Neumann and Dr. Sue Edwards describe what organic mentoring is: a natural, less contrived relationship where one woman listens, encourages, and builds up the other. Neumann and Edwards remind mentors that young women don't really want "the Bible answer woman," but rather a trusted friend who will share her own life stories.

Think you'd like to be a mentor? Then why don't you start with coffee. Seminary professors Barbara Neumann and Dr. Sue Edwards encourage women to be attentive to the mentoring opportunities around them, and to forget the idea that mentoring has to be structured. They remind women that reaching a younger generation means they'll need to enter the world of millennials.

No one likes to be marginalized. But if you follow Christ in this post-modern culture, you will be. Tom Gilson, author of the book, "Critical Conversations: A Christian Parents' Guide to Discussing Homosexuality with Teens," reminds us that there's an incessant onslaught against God and against truth today. Moms and dads need to have critical conversations with their kids about spiritual and cultural issues so they will know how to respond when questioned about their faith and values.

When Caleb Kaltenbach told his mom and dad—who had divorced when he was 2 because they discovered they were each gay—of his desire to attend Bible college, they weren't happy about it. Now a pastor, Caleb recalls the first time his mother came to hear one of his sermons when he was a young pastoral intern, much to the angst of the elders. Caleb shares how his parents eventually embraced Christ.

Paul said that it was the kindness of God that leads to repentance. Caleb Kaltenbach can vouch for that. Caleb talks about what it was like growing up with a mom and dad who divorced each other because they realized they were both gay. He also explains how his attempt to prove the Bible was false actually started him on a walk of faith, and eventually led him into the pastorate.

Every family is messy. Caleb Kaltenbach's is no exception. Caleb reflects on growing up with a mom and dad who divorced when he was 2 upon discovering they were each gay. Caleb's mother shared a home with her partner for 22 years, and his father stayed in the closet until Caleb was in college. Caleb offers unique insight on how the gay community perceives Christians.
