Dave and Ann Wilson

Shut Up and Repent

May 11, 2020

Dave and Ann Wilson, authors of the book "Vertical Marriage," look back on a turning point in their marriage. At the time, they had two children, Dave was starting a church, and he served as a chaplain for the Detroit Lions. Ministry demands occupied much of his time, and Ann was feeling the strain of his absence. Dave takes us back to his big wake up call, and together they share what they did to get their marriage back on track.

Hear how Fitzpatrick and Schumacher are raising their daughters and sons to embrace their gender and love the person God made them to be.

How has the culture influenced your view of womanhood? Elyse Fitzpatrick, counselor and author of the book "Worthy," is joined by her co-author Eric Schumacher, as she tells how her thoughts of femininity and submission changed through the years. Fitzpatrick assented to the idea of submission, and her easy-going husband made it easy for her to love and respect him. Fitzpatrick tells what submission really is, as Scripture defines it, and coaches wives on how to speak hard things from their hearts without being disrespectful to their husbands.

Authors Elyse Fitzpatrick and Eric Schumacher talk about the role of women in the church. In years past, women were often frowned upon and thought less of than men. Women have made great strides through the years: socially, educationally, and economically. But are women considered equal once they step through the church doors? Fitzpatrick reminds us that women typically comprise 50% or more of most congregations and to overlook their insights and spiritual giftings is to miss a great blessing.

Barbara Rainey, founder and creator of Ever Thine Home, joins Dave and Ann Wilson to talk about her newest book, "My Heart, Ever His." As a lover of the Psalms, Barbara began to realize the importance of pouring her heart out to the Lord through written prayers. The more vulnerable she allowed herself to be with the Lord, the more she enjoyed it, and the more comfort she received from His presence. Rainey hopes that by sharing these heartfelt prayers with other women, they will be as encouraged and comforted as she has been.

Author Maria Furlough wasn't always the confident woman she is today. In fact, if you would have known her when she was younger you would have seen an insecure girl struggling with disordered eating who eventually became addicted to diet pills. Counseling helped, and now Maria has a family of her own.  Now Maria's goal is to be healthy, not skinny, while modeling a healthy body image to her daughter. Furlough encourages moms to began sowing seeds of healthy self-confidence in their daughters when they are very young and to prepare their girls for the changes that come with puberty.

Author Maria Furlough used to obsess about her weight and outward appearance. Her mother had done the same, and she knew her daughter would repeat her behavior unless she taught her differently. Furlough reminds listeners that "charm is deceitful and beauty is vain," and that the numbers on the scale don't have to define us. That's why she's intentional now about modeling a healthy self-image in front of her daughter. How? She watches her tongue, making sure she makes no disparaging remarks about herself, her weight, or her aging body. She also reminds her daughter that she has value beyond her physical appearance.

How can a mom encourage a healthy self-image in her daughters? Maria Furlough, author of "Confident Moms, Confident Daughters," remembers being self-conscious and ashamed of her growing teenage body, so much so that she remembers the day she ripped her blue jeans off in disgust as she cried at her image in the mirror. Now a mother herself, Furlough tries to encourage her daughter to love the beautiful way God designed her, and tells other moms how they can do the same with their daughters.
