Reflecting Christ in Christmas

December 2, 2013
Christmas memories are some of the sweetest remembrances we have. Barbara Rainey reminisces about the Christmases of her youth, and her mother, dropping in by phone, surprises her with a few memories of her own. Barbara shares what it was like in the Rainey home with six children helping her decorate, and tells what led her to create Christmas ornaments that focus on Christ. Also chiming in on the Rainey Christmas experience are Rainey daughters, Rebecca and Laura.

Kids need to know they’re loved, but they also need hope. Children’s author, Sally Lloyd-Jones, explains that children are easily discouraged when they sense they aren’t getting it right. Sally tells how her book, “Thoughts to Make Your Heart Sing,” invites children to see what God – the creator of everything, says about them, His true masterpieces. Sally wants children to know that God will turn everything bad into good in the end, and that the best is yet to come. Sally tells how she became a children’s writer, and shares her perspective on American children today.

Sometimes one bold, courageous step can lead to a higher calling and purpose. Such is the case for Sally Lloyd-Jones, author of “The Jesus Storybook Bible.” Sally recalls how her father sent her off to boarding school at the tender age of eight with the words of Joshua 1, “Be strong and very courageous.” Though ill and terribly frightened at the time, Sally was sure that God was going ahead of her. Sally tells how those years of boarding school stretched her imagination and helped mold her into the writer she is today.

Love may involve cards and flowers, but it's so much more than that.  Biblical counselor Paul David Tripp explains that love is willing self-sacrifice.  He further contrasts our culture's contractual view of love - I do this and you do that, to the biblical view of love which loves another not because they deserve it but because God loved us first.

Selfishness runs in our DNA. That's why we need to make confession and forgiveness a part of our lifestyle, according to Paul David Tripp. Paul recalls a time in his own marriage when his eyes were opened to his own anger issues, and he was finally in a place where God could change and restore him.
