My Battle with Porn

October 24, 2014
Some habits are hard to break. Clarence Shuler talks about his past struggles with pornography. Exposed to illicit images when he was young, Shuler tells how he tried to shake off the habit, especially during his seminary studies and the ministry that followed. He explains that it wasn't until he exposed his sin to the light and confessed his addiction to others that he found deliverance from this enslaving habit.

Is dating that beneficial? According to pastors Gerald Hiestand and Jay Thomas, not really. For Hiestand and Thomas, the activity of going on a date isn't a problem, but too many people use the dating relationship to justify their sexual activity, as if "being in a relationship" makes promiscuity okay. Instead of dating, they encourage singles to establish dating friendships, getting to know someone gradually over time, and then making their intentions of marriage known before beginning to date exclusively.

How far is too far? Pastors Gerald Hiestand and Jay Thomas share a biblical theology of dating aimed at persuading a new generation of Christians to get serious about honoring Christ with their sexuality.

We learn things in the crucible of life that we won't learn anywhere else. Author Paul Miller returns to the Book of Ruth to teach us a lesson about love. Naomi lost all of her family except her daughters-in-law. She went back to Israel bitter of heart, even though Ruth has made this amazing pledge to her. It's an entirely one-way love. Ruth goes the distance to care for Naomi, and that's what we must do if we are to love like Christ does.

We must embrace Christ in His suffering. Best-selling author and father of six, Paul Miller, is joined by his autistic daughter, Kim, 32, as he talks about joining into Christ's fellowship of suffering. Paul reflects on his and Kim's first airline trip together, and explains that real love bears the weight of someone else's life. It's there, Paul states, that you get to know God in ways you've never imagined.

What's the best way to learn about love? Dive in! Paul Miller, executive director of seeJesus, opens up the Book of Ruth to illustrate the meaning of hesed love, a steadfast kind of love and commitment that knows no exit strategy. When we're loving and aren't loved back as we would like, it's then that we learn how to press into the pain and suffering and love like Christ. Until your relationship costs you something, you haven't gotten to love yet, says Paul. Love is, after all, self-sacrifice.

Being a pastor has its benefits, as well as its challenges. Bible counselor Paul David Tripp talks about the pitfalls unique to pastors and those in vocational ministry. Tripp recalls the struggles he experienced early in his ministry when the chasm between his life as a pastor and his real life as a husband and father became wider and wider. Though his wife voiced her concerns, Tripp says he didn't listen until he had almost destroyed his life and ministry. Tripp tells pastors how to recognize signs of burnout and other common problems of the heart.

What factors contribute to a child's success or failure?  Brad Wilcox, the Director of the National Marriage Project at the University of Virginia, talks about the impact that single parents are having on our communities. Raised by a single mother, Brad doesn't believe the parents of the 50's and 60's got it all right, since human sin existed then just as it does now, but he does believe that communities pay a price when we don't have a strong marriage culture.

Are you estranged from your mother or father? Leslie Leyland Fields has been there.  Leslie reflects on her own journey of forgiveness which began one Sunday when the words of the Lord's Prayer penetrated her heart like an arrow:  "Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us."  Leslie shares what she did to begin to see her father through the eyes of Christ, a process she now admits, changed her life.
