Most of us think we communicate effectively using our devices. Pastor and author Dr. Emerson Eggerichs reminds us that the best communication still occurs face to face, utilizing vocal tone, body language, and complete sentences. The danger of electronic communication is the digital footprint we leave. That means that whatever we put "out there" is never going away. Let's remember the audience of One who is always watching and listening.

Have you ever hit send, and then regretted it later? Communications expert Dr. Emerson Eggerichs encourages listeners to ask themselves four questions before saying and sending anything to another person: Is it true? Is it kind? Is it necessary? Is it clear? If you can answer any one of these with a "no," then reconsider sending the message. Speak the truth in love with care.

Five days later Van Warner found Tommy in an old, abandoned building in town, barely recognizable and on the brink of an overdose. Detox and rehab came next, but it wouldn't be his last.

Eaton challenges parents to have four different conversation with their kids before giving them a cell phone. Start with the questions: "How is the smart phone very good, how is it cursed, and how can we as a family redeem it?" End with a conversation about trust. David Eaton is a contributor to Dennis and Barbara Rainey's book, "The Art of Parenting."
