Mentoring Over Coffee

July 10, 2018

Think you'd like to be a mentor? Then why don't you start with coffee. Seminary professors Barbara Neumann and Dr. Sue Edwards encourage women to be attentive to the mentoring opportunities around them, and to forget the idea that mentoring has to be structured. They remind women that reaching a younger generation means they'll need to enter the world of millennials.

No one likes to be marginalized. But if you follow Christ in this post-modern culture, you will be. Tom Gilson, author of the book, "Critical Conversations: A Christian Parents' Guide to Discussing Homosexuality with Teens," reminds us that there's an incessant onslaught against God and against truth today. When Caleb Kaltenbach told his mom and dad—who had divorced when he was 2 because they discovered they were each gay—of his desire to attend Bible college, they weren't happy about it. Now a pastor, Caleb recalls the first time his mother came to hear one of his sermons when he was a young pastoral intern, much to the angst of the elders. Caleb shares how his parents eventually embraced Christ.

Paul said that it was the kindness of God that leads to repentance. Caleb Kaltenbach can vouch for that. He also explains how his attempt to prove the Bible was false actually started him on a walk of faith, and eventually led him into the pastorate.

Stanford tells how a person can know if they need to see a psychologist, and explains how God has put a system in us that is fight or flight. Stanford coaches parents whose son or daughter might have a mental disorder on how to proceed.

Matthew Stanford, author of the book, "Grace for the Afflicted," talks about the silent epidemic of depression that is sweeping across the U.S., affecting 45 million people, many of whom get no treatment. Medication is often over prescribed, and mental health issues have been turned over to the world, when clergy could be a real help to the hurting if they were trained. Stanford shares his concerns about children being treated for ADHD, and encourages those struggling with depression to seek out a faith-based, ethical psychologist.
