Like Mom, Like Daughter

April 29, 2020

Author Maria Furlough wasn't always the confident woman she is today. In fact, if you would have known her when she was younger you would have seen an insecure girl struggling with disordered eating who eventually became addicted to diet pills. Counseling helped, and now Maria has a family of her own.  Now Maria's goal is to be healthy, not skinny, while modeling a healthy body image to her daughter. Furlough encourages moms to began sowing seeds of healthy self-confidence in their daughters when they are very young and to prepare their girls for the changes that come with puberty.

Author Maria Furlough used to obsess about her weight and outward appearance. Her mother had done the same, and she knew her daughter would repeat her behavior unless she taught her differently. Furlough reminds listeners that "charm is deceitful and beauty is vain," and that the numbers on the scale don't have to define us. That's why she's intentional now about modeling a healthy self-image in front of her daughter. How? She watches her tongue, making sure she makes no disparaging remarks about herself, her weight, or her aging body. She also reminds her daughter that she has value beyond her physical appearance.

How can a mom encourage a healthy self-image in her daughters? Maria Furlough, author of "Confident Moms, Confident Daughters," remembers being self-conscious and ashamed of her growing teenage body, so much so that she remembers the day she ripped her blue jeans off in disgust as she cried at her image in the mirror. Now a mother herself, Furlough tries to encourage her daughter to love the beautiful way God designed her, and tells other moms how they can do the same with their daughters.

Kim Anthony, host of the podcast "Unfavorable Odds," talks with human trafficking expert Rebecca Bender. Bender fell into prostitution through the encouragement of her boyfriend who was a trafficker, and explains how she turned to drugs and eventually overdosed. Hitting rock bottom, she found herself at a Christian rehab center where she encountered God and was radically delivered from her addiction. Now drug free, Bender tells how she returned to her boyfriend, only to leave him later for another trafficker, where she endured violent abuse. Fearing for her life and the life of her daughter, Bender tells how she eventually escaped.

FamilyLife COO Chris Herndon and his wife, Mary, remember God's goodness as they reflect on Mary's diagnosis of a brain tumor in 2017. Almost a year later, their son, Charlie, was diagnosed with MRSA, a type of staph infection that is untreatable by many types of antibiotics. After 23 days in the hospital and with his condition worsening, Charlie was transported to a children's hospital in Cincinnati where he spent another 30 days. By God's grace there was a breakthrough, and his recovery is now documented in medical journals.

The chicks have flown the nest. Now what? Author Dave Harvey believes that when young adults leave home, it reveals what a couple has built throughout their marriage. Of course, there will be some adjustments as responsibilities shift and couples rediscover each other. A husband and wife may even realize that they're living as strangers, and their spiritual walk is on life support. Harvey reminds couples to get help if needed and stir up the fires that once were flames. It's never too late to build a marriage that's great!

When your spouse is in a season of suffering, how do you help them? Author and pastor Dave Harvey reminds us that how we respond to suffering says a lot about our understanding of marriage. Harvey encourages husbands and wives to really listen to their spouse's struggles, and then ask questions, rather than try to fix them. Harvey shares the story of one couple who walked through a challenging circumstance and then saw God work in a most unexpected way.

Dave Harvey, author of "I Still Do," talks about the circles of influence that make up each one of us. In the center is the heart, which is the wellspring of our worship and motivations. Surrounding that is our embodied soul wrapped in flesh. Another circle is our social systems, like families, which influence who we are. Everyone has a context, and once a husband or wife understands what their spouse's context is, they'll love and understand each other better.

Kelly Needham, author and wife of musician Jimmy Needham, talks about the benefit of being real in our friendships. She remembers an instance when a friend shared difficult words, and instead of fully listening, Kelly preached at her. Another time she avoided a friend she didn't want to face. We've all been there. The Scriptures remind us to speak the truth in love if we want our friendships to have deep roots.

Kelly Needham, author of the book, "Friend-ish," talks about the valuable role friendship plays in our lives. All friendships aren't created equal, however. Sometimes what drives a friendship is a person's longing for importance or popularity. Christian friendship should rise above this, especially since believers share a common mission—to glorify God.
