Is Anxiety a Sin?

June 27, 2018

Are you an anxious person? Psychologist Matthew Stanford talks about complexities of anxiety disorders, which include panic disorders, separation anxiety, and OCD disorder. Stanford tells how a person can know if they need to see a psychologist, and explains how God has put a system in us that is fight or flight. If a tiger walked in the room we would express anxiety, but to a person with an anxiety disorder, that stress is ongoing, even when the tiger isn't there. Stanford coaches parents whose son or daughter might have a mental disorder on how to proceed.

Matthew Stanford, author of the book, "Grace for the Afflicted," talks about the silent epidemic of depression that is sweeping across the U.S., affecting 45 million people, many of whom get no treatment. Medication is often over prescribed, and mental health issues have been turned over to the world, when clergy could be a real help to the hurting if they were trained. Stanford shares his concerns about children being treated for ADHD, and encourages those struggling with depression to seek out a faith-based, ethical psychologist.

Matthew Stanford, CEO of the Hope and Healing Center & Institute in Houston, Texas, believes if Christians want to help those struggling with mental disorders, they have to understand what they are. Stanford explains we are all broken to some degree due to original sin, and we need to treat those affected by mental illness with the same compassion and respect as those battling cancer or any other illness. Mental disorders are a combination of biology and environment, like prenatal care, and those with them have the same spiritual needs as anyone else.

You were meant to bloom! Businessman Jack Alexander, a former recipient of an Ernst & Young National Entrepreneur of the Year Award, reminds us that God can and will provide all our needs especially if we put Him first in our lives. Just as Jesus fed the 5,000 by taking the bread, looking toward heaven, and blessing it, we also can consecrate what we have by offering our all to the Lord, whether that be our tithe, our children, or our talents.

Businessman Jack Alexander believes that each person always has something to give, if not financially, then through their time and talents. Alexander, who grew up in a family where resources were scarce, tells how he came to faith in Christ in Australia while he was on a business trip, and how believing in the God of abundance changed his life. Alexander cautions listeners to avoid capacity killers like debt, porn, drugs and alcohol and to lean into God, who sees a forest in one tiny seed.
