July 10, 2020

How can Jennifer Greenberg, a trained opera singer, still sing and find joy despite growing up with a father who was physically and sexually abusive? Or a mom who enabled the abuse? Or a pastor who didn't offer protection and help, but only reinforced her worst fears? Listen as hosts Dave and Ann Wilson, with Bob Lepine, uncover the source of Jennifer's defiant belief in a God who never leaves nor forsakes you, but One who knows our suffering first-hand.

Bob Lepine, with hosts Dave and Ann Wilson, sit down with Jennifer Greenberg, author of the book "Not Forsaken," as she tells her story of growing up with a father who was teaching Sunday School at church while at the same time being physically, sexually, and emotionally abusive at home. Jennifer would have nightmares about being raped, and expected to die before turning 21. Hear the chilling details of the moment her father actually confessed out loud, "You're gonna have to accept that I'm evil." But also find the hope Jennifer found in Genesis 50:20, "You meant evil against me; but God meant it for good."

The only way to really love like you mean it is to show the attributes of love used by the Apostle Paul in 1 Corinthians 13. Hosts Dave and Ann Wilson sit down with Bob Lepine to discuss his new book on godly love, which is patient, kind, etc. Learn why niceness merely responds, but kindness initiates. A wife serving her husband in tangible ways in the home. A husband filling his wife's car with gas to relieve that worry. Both are acts of lovingkindness and a reflection of a God whose "lovingkindness is better than life." (Psalm 63:3, NKJV)

Dive deep into 1 Corinthians 13 as Bob Lepine, along with hosts Dave and Ann Wilson, discuss the counter-intuitive principles of love God has given for lifelong relationships. According to 1 Corinthians, the Christian's job description starts with long-suffering, rugged, durable patience, not adrenaline-rush feelings. Discover the two best words to describe "agape" love. Ponder how God demonstrated His love for us (Romans 5:8). Find hope for any spouse who feels alone in offering this 1 Corinthians 13 kind of love in their marriage, and how to continue to show compassion and grace while also remembering that patience does not mean enabling destructive behavior.

"FamilyLife Today" hosts Dave and Ann Wilson interview Bob Lepine about his new book, "Love Like You Mean It," and the marriage-transforming truths found in 1 Corinthians 13. Unfortunately, many of us use the phrase "I love you" too casually. Our view of love is based more on how marriage makes us feel rather than how we make our spouse feel. But according to Jesus, the greatest experience of love, in marriage and in life, is found only by those who lay down their lives for the people around them. Learn one practical tip on how to know whether you are displaying biblical love

Blending a family isn't easy, but it's definitely worth it. Blended family expert Ron Deal reminds couples that their marriage must be a priority if the marriage is going to thrive. Each couple is called to leave and cleave, which means a couple must shift their allegiance from their children to each other. There will always be seasons when children's needs will have to come ahead of other things, but a husband and wife need to put each other first to maintain a healthy marriage. Hear one young woman share what it's like to be a stepdaughter.
