Grandparenting On Purpose

November 6, 2020

What can you do to intentionally encourage your grandchildren? Pastor Josh Mulvihill and his wife, Jen, remind grandparents that they can be a powerful force for good in their grandchildren's lives, but only if they spend time with them. Remember, kids spell love T-I-M-E. Holidays are great times to interact, but let's not limit our time to holidays. Technology offers many ways to connect. Also, go where they are since families with young children often find travel difficult. Grandparent, you have so much to offer, from your wisdom and guidance, to your presence.

Studies show that grandparents are the second most important influence in a child's life, according to Pastor Josh Mulvihill and his wife, Jen. Not only can they be a great support to weary parents, but their goal, according to Psalm 78, is to see their faith passed on to successive generations. Grandparents can be a beautiful model of God's love and compassion, even to prodigal grandchildren, but this requires they intentionally nurture the relationship between themselves and the grandchildren.

Is my child my disciple? Pastor Adam Griffin coaches parents on what it means to disciple their children. Griffin shares how his family opens their home for hospitality as a way to evangelize their neighbors, and the Wilsons, as well as Bob Lepine, share what their families have done to show their kids that evangelism is a normal and natural part of life. Don't forget bedtime. Tucking the kids into bed is a great opportunity to read Bible stories and pray with and for them.

A Christian's calling is to make disciples, and for a parent your first disciples are your kids. Author Adam Griffin joins us to talk about a parent's responsibility to love and disciple his/her children. As seen in Deuteronomy, the Hebrews were commanded to talk to their children about the things of God at every opportunity. The key is for parents to live out their faith with passion. This doesn't mean setting a perfect example, but modeling repentance and forgiveness when we fail.

Your children need guidance, and you are their guide. Adam Griffin, author of the book, "Family Discipleship," talks about a parent's call to intentionally teach their children what it means to love God and love others. This involves making spiritual deposits in the life of your kids whenever possible, whether you're doing family devotions, sitting around the dinner table, or taking a walk in the woods enjoying God's creation.

Is God offended by our melancholy and depression? Pastor and seminary professor David Murray points to King David's conflicting emotions in the Psalms and shows us the link between our mind and our emotions. The Psalms gives us permission to take our horrible feelings and thoughts and give them all to God. We can help ourselves, and our teens, if we learn to take every thought captive and stop our negative thinking.

Teens can be moody. But how can you tell if a son or daughter is experiencing normal teenage angst or something more serious? Pastor David Murray, author of Why Is My Teen Feeling Like This?, explains most teens go through spells of quietness and withdrawal, but it won't last long. If you see your teen retreating, do something they enjoy doing and start the dialogue. If your teen is totally uncommunicative or alludes to suicide, seek professional help with either a medical doctor or Christian counselor.

Are Christians exempt from anxiety and depression? Pastor and author David Murray experienced a couple of burnouts firsthand and talks about his faithful wife's bout with depression that left her incapacitated and unable to sleep or pray. Murray reminds us we are not disembodied spirits. When our soul goes wrong, our bodies follow; and when our bodies go wrong, our souls often go wrong, too. This goes for teens as well. Find our how teen anxiety differs from an adults.
