Parenting as Discipleship

November 3, 2020

A Christian's calling is to make disciples, and for a parent your first disciples are your kids. Author Adam Griffin joins us to talk about a parent's responsibility to love and disciple his/her children. As seen in Deuteronomy, the Hebrews were commanded to talk to their children about the things of God at every opportunity. The key is for parents to live out their faith with passion. This doesn't mean setting a perfect example, but modeling repentance and forgiveness when we fail.

Your children need guidance, and you are their guide. Adam Griffin, author of the book, "Family Discipleship," talks about a parent's call to intentionally teach their children what it means to love God and love others. This involves making spiritual deposits in the life of your kids whenever possible, whether you're doing family devotions, sitting around the dinner table, or taking a walk in the woods enjoying God's creation.

Is God offended by our melancholy and depression? Pastor and seminary professor David Murray points to King David's conflicting emotions in the Psalms and shows us the link between our mind and our emotions. The Psalms gives us permission to take our horrible feelings and thoughts and give them all to God. Teens can be moody. But how can you tell if a son or daughter is experiencing normal teenage angst or something more serious? Pastor David Murray, author of Why Is My Teen Feeling Like This?, explains most teens go through spells of quietness and withdrawal, but it won't last long. If you see your teen retreating, do something they enjoy doing and start the dialogue. If your teen is totally uncommunicative or alludes to suicide, seek professional help with either a medical doctor or Christian counselor.

Are Christians exempt from anxiety and depression? Pastor and author David Murray experienced a couple of burnouts firsthand and talks about his faithful wife's bout with depression that left her incapacitated and unable to sleep or pray. Murray reminds us we are not disembodied spirits. When our soul goes wrong, our bodies follow; and when our bodies go wrong, our souls often go wrong, too. This goes for teens as well. Find our how teen anxiety differs from an adults.

Bob Lepine's paraphrase of the words of the Apostle Paul asserts that gospel unity should always be more important, more significant, and more powerful than whatever our disagreements are about, who we’re voting for, or our views on governance. Hear the conclusion of Bob's sermon, reminding believers of the importance of humility, civility, and unity in political discourse.

In the ever-escalating tension of today's culture, Bob Lepine poses this question to the congregation at Redeemer Church in Little Rock, Ark.: How would Jesus want us to represent Him when we talk about society, politics, and government? According to the Bible, what we agree on about Jesus and the essentials of our faith should bind us together in Christ tighter than our politics should divide us.
