Every couple will have conflict. But it's how they handle that conflict that makes all the difference. Author Jim Burns explains that fear is often hiding behind our defensiveness. He feared that his wife wouldn't like him, for example, and his wife, Kathy, often feared Jim would leave her. But once you realize your fears, you can face them and handle conflict better. In some cases, a couple might have to agree to disagree, and that's okay.

The best thing a couple can do for their marriage is to pray together every day. The second best: laugh. Burns realized the fun had slipped from his own marriage when his daughter came home one day and said the couple she had been babysitting had told her that her parents used to be so fun and funny. Phillip Bethancourt tells how he and his wife intentionally shape their children's identity through the three c's: connect, create, and and compete. They try to create an environment where kids can interact with each other rather than a screen; where kids can create things for themselves with chalk, colors, and Legos; and where they compete and challenge each other to be their best. Bethancourt also shares how kids are being shaped by technology, and how their family is setting boundaries for its use.

Our sexuality is at the core of who we are. Phillip Bethancourt, author of "Christ-Centered Parenting," believes parents need to have conversations with their kids around the topic of sex and sexuality starting when they are young. The fact is, children are learning about sex from their peers, older siblings, and kids on the bus. Young children can learn the basics about their bodies, and Passport2Purity is a great way for older children to learn about the birds and the bees while parents are available to field questions. Regardless of age, parents need to keep coming back to those gospel foundations about sexuality.

Jen Weaver, author of "A Wife's Secret to Happiness," knows that marriage is a lot like dancing: One partner has to lead while the other has to follow. Otherwise, you're only stepping on each other's toes. Weaver shares how she's tried to curb her assertiveness so that her husband can lead their family. This especially applied to children, which she waited to have until Jared felt peace about the timing of their family. Weaver admits she could have fought to get her way, but believed that God was at work in her husband and she would have a baby in due time.

Weaver remembers once when she was complaining, she sensed God's still, small voice ask her if she was going to talk to Him about this. That's when she knew she needed to be intentional about enlisting God's help for their marriage.

About Dave and Ann Wilson

Dave and Ann Wilson are co-hosts of FamilyLife Today©, FamilyLife’s nationally-syndicated radio program.

Dave and Ann have been married for more than 40 years and have spent the last 35 teaching and mentoring couples and parents across the country. They have been featured speakers at FamilyLife’s Weekend to Remember® since 1993, and have also hosted their own marriage conferences across the country.

Dave and Ann helped plant Kensington Community Church in Detroit, Michigan where they served together in ministry for more than three decades, wrapping up their time at Kensington in 2020.

The Wilsons are the creative force behind DVD teaching series Rock Your Marriage and The Survival Guide To Parenting, as well as authors of the recently released books Vertical Marriage (Zondervan, 2019) and No Perfect Parents (Zondervan, 2021).

Dave is a graduate of the International School of Theology, where he received a Master of Divinity degree. A Ball State University Hall of Fame Quarterback, Dave served the Detroit Lions as Chaplain for thirty-three years. Ann attended the University of Kentucky. She has been active with Dave in ministry as a speaker, writer, small group leader, and mentor to countless women.

The Wilsons live in the Detroit area. They have three grown sons, CJ, Austin, and Cody, three daughters-in-law, and a growing number of grandchildren.
