January 27, 2014
New Year's is a great time for new beginnings. What if you made it your goal for 2014 to be the most loving year ever in your home? To help you, Barbara Rainey, joined by her husband, Dennis Rainey, has created a terrific new tool called "How Do I Love Thee?" to help you focus on the real meaning of love as defined in 1 Corinthians 13. Barbara tells how you and your spouse, or even the whole family, can read one of the short devotionals included in the resource each day to learn about and reflect on the 14 qualities of love that God values most.

Which Fruit of the Spirit is hardest for you? Peace? Patience? Kindness? Dennis Rainey talks to Michael and Hayley DiMarco about how the fruits of God's Spirit can powerfully transform a person's life, as well as a marriage. Hayley shares how, in the beginning of her marriage, she allowed her flesh to rule her life, but once she confessed that she couldn't do life in her own power and needed God's help, life became more satisfying and fulfilling.

Marriage wasn't going well for Michael and Hayley DiMarco. Although deeply in love, their differences were igniting a host of arguments and misunderstandings. The DiMarcos talk about their early years of marriage beginning with their disappointing honeymoon to the end of their first year when Hayley was volleying thrift store plates at the basement wall just to release her anger. As Hayley studied the fruits of the Spirit as promised in Galatians 9:22, she realized she wasn't tapping into the power available to her. Once she began relying on God's power their marriage began to blossom.

Do you feel like you're connecting with your husband? If not, the two of you might want to spend more time behind closed doors. Author Nina Roesner explains that physical intimacy is as important to men as emotionally connecting is to women, and without that, a man may be less attentive to his wife emotionally. Roesner encourages wives not to neglect intimacy in their marriage, but to respect her husband's needs in the bedroom, as well as out of it, knowing that by doing so she's building a healthy relationship.

Do you speak your man's love language? Nina Roesner, author of The Love Dare, says that if you're not respecting your husband, then you probably aren't. Roesner explains that when a woman speaks a man's language of respect, he will reciprocate in kind with the love she craves. Roesner says she learned this lesson the hard way, by failing to communicate respect to her husband and focusing instead on what he could do for her, and not on how she could love and serve him. But when God showed her the error of her ways, she saw her marriage improve by leaps and bounds.

Nina Roesner wasn't happy in her marriage. Though her husband ranked their relationship a perfect ten, she only rated it a two. Roesner, the Executive Director of Greater Impact Ministries, tells how God grew her in her relationship with her husband as she began to delve into the topics of respect and submission. Roesner began to realize that she had to communicate her needs, rather than expecting her spouse to read her mind, and that learning to respect her husband was the first step in learning to love him well.

Our children learn what it means to be God's man or woman from us. They do what they see us doing. But wouldn't it be great if we could explain what it means as well? Pastor Todd Wagner came up with a simple explanation of manhood and womanhood so that he could teach his children. Hear him explain the five S's of being a woman, beginning with "Seek God first."
