The Role of Prayer in a Spiritual Awakening - II

May 4, 2022

The greatest hindrance to the advancement of the gospel is the attempt by the Church to do the work of God apart from the power of God. That’s the assessment of Pastor David Platt. He adds that maybe the biggest barrier to spreading the good news is not the self-indulgent immorality of our culture, but our self-sufficient mentality within the Body of Christ. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the pastor of McLean Bible Church explains that the primary purpose of prayer is not to get something, but to know God and to understand that He works through willing intercessors.

Bringing Up Boys
With so much confusion about the role of men in society, it’s no wonder we have questions about how to bring up boys in the right way. Why are so many young males in crisis? What qualities should we be instilling in our sons? The culture has vilified masculinity, and as a result, an entire generation of boys is growing up without a clear idea of what it means to be a man. To help parents confront this challenge, the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute has developed a new 10-day email series based on Dr. Dobson’s best-selling book, Bringing Up Boys. It’s designed to equip you to wisely lead your sons to become godly men.

1 Thessalonians 5:17 says, “Pray without ceasing.” But according to David Platt, our church culture today is known for preaching, writing and passive listening, but not for prayer and fasting. Unless we take action, we are in danger of missing the whole point. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the pastor of McLean Bible Church in Washington D.C. shares the value of our prayers, in an address given at the 2019 National Day of Prayer. He explains how we see various characteristics of God when we fervently pray like Moses did in Exodus 32.

Since Russia began waging war on the Ukraine in February 2022, over six million Ukrainians have fled the country while another seven million have relocated near the Western border. On today’s exclusive edition of Family Talk, Rev. Franklin Graham, President of the Christian organization, Samaritan’s Purse, describes the devastation of the war, having just returned from the Ukrainian city, Lviv. He explains to Dr. Tim Clinton that his ministry has set up two field hospitals, six medical clinics, and distributed over 450 tons of food. Thankfully, Samaritan’s Purse has a relationship with 3,200 Ukrainian churches who are distributing the supplies.

As the Supreme Court seems poised to overturn Roe v. Wade, Lord willing, it’s imperative for America’s Bible-believing pastors to preach Genesis 1:26, Jeremiah 1:5, and Psalm 139. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. William Lile adds that the fight for life is not just a battle for God’s preborn, but a battle for the heart and soul of this nation. The “pro-life doc” points out that now is the time to be preparing the church and pro-life organizations for what’s to come. He points to the irony that Congress penalizes those who disturb the freshly laid eggs of endangered sea turtles on the beach with a $100,000 fine, while a woman can terminate her pregnancy in any trimester with no legal repercussions. Dr. Lile states that every Christian, like the biblical Esther, must be prepared to become a voice for the voiceless “for such a time as this.”

Prior to the COVID-19 pandemic, 39% of all American abortions were the result of the abortion pill known as RU-486. Today, a shocking 54% of abortions occur through the deadly procedure. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. William Lile discusses a resource that has rescued over 3,000 babies. After taking the lethal abortion pill, a mother can contact AbortionPillReversal.com, where trained professionals will offer support and outreach to potentially help save her baby. This could be through the prescription of the natural hormone progesterone, with the hope of preserving the pregnancy. The goal is to start treatment within the first 24 hours, but many successful reversals have occurred within the first 72 hours of taking the first set of pills.

In 1999, Dr. William Lile, also known as “the pro-life doc,” purchased the largest abortion practice in the Florida Panhandle. He immediately stopped all abortions and redesigned the practice, dedicating it to pro-life women’s health. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the obstetrician explains that he has two patients -- the pregnant mother and her pre-born baby. With the advance of technology, Dr. Lile can perform life-saving surgeries on babies in the womb. Sadly, Christian medical students are being unfairly rejected as residents because of the evil, pro-abortion mentality of today’s medical professionals.

When two Oregon teachers were fired for objecting to being forced to use incorrect pronouns when addressing gender-confused students, they contacted the Pacific Justice Institute. Thanks to their pro bono lawsuit, their positions were reinstated. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Brad Dacus (DAY-kus), president of this Christian legal defense organization, highlights similar cases they have taken on behalf of religious liberty. Wherever modern-day “Davids” are standing tall in the face of giants, Pacific Justice Institute unapologetically defends them -- free of charge.

Despite the fact that the church and Christian values are in the crosshairs of an increasingly godless culture, there is still hope. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Brad Dacus (DAY-kus), president of Pacific Justice Institute, reminds us that the previous administration’s judicial appointments provide a balance of power. Specifically, the Supreme Court is demonstrably in favor of life, parental rights, and religious liberty. As a non-profit legal defense organization, Pacific Justice Institute has 20 offices in 16 states, and represents Christians free of charge whenever their God-given rights are infringed upon.

When most people think of getting fit, they focus exclusively on strengthening their physical bodies. But, on today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Walt Larimore points to the importance of another kind of strength training through the pursuit of a healthy life balance – relationally, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. Dr. Larimore stresses the value of healthy eating but also underscores the need to read the Bible, forgive others, spend time outdoors, and volunteer.

Scripture is clear that we honor God when we take care of the bodies He entrusted to us. 1 Corinthians 6:19 says, “Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you, whom you have from God?” On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Walt Larimore, author of Fit Over 50, explains that your life is like a car with four wheels. If one of them goes flat, the whole car wobbles. This respected family doctor, who faithfully practiced medicine in order to help others, explains that your four health “wheels” are spiritual, emotional, relational, and physical.

What equipped Kayleigh McEnany to answer the tough questions as the White House press secretary? She studied politics at Georgetown and Oxford, received a Harvard law degree, and was an unapologetic Christian. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the author of For Such a Time as This explains that Jesus Christ was her rock as she daily sparred with a hostile White House press. Her academic training and faith empowered her to navigate the COVID pandemic, the riots, and the contentious 2020 presidential election. Kayleigh’s life verse, 2 Corinthians 4:17, says, “For your light and momentary troubles are achieving for you a greater glory that will outweigh them all.”
