Dr. James Dobson

The Bible from 30,000 Feet - II

February 8, 2023

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson continues his insightful conversation with Pastor Skip Heitzig, author of The Bible from 30,000 Feet. They explain why we can believe in the authenticity of God's Word and identify why it is a cohesive narrative from Genesis to Revelation. With a desire to inspire Christians to “sink their teeth” into God’s Word, Pastor Heitzig shares with Dr. Dobson, “A day without reading the Bible is a lost day for me. It's a wasted day!” Psalm 139:1-2 says, “You have searched me, Lord, and you know me. You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.”

What Is a Woman, According to God?
What is a woman? You might think that this is a simple question. In recent years, however, it has become as hard to answer for many people as an algebra problem, the kind some of us once sweated out in high school. Few topics have created more confusion and a firestorm of vitriol than the discussion of gender ideology. At the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute (JDFI), we understand parents are desperate for answers, and we want to help. A regular JDFI contributor, Dr. Owen Strachan, who is provost and research professor of theology at Grace Bible Theological Seminary, addresses the question of "What Is a Woman, According to God?" in his new essay. We wanted to make it easy to read and available to share with your family and friends, so we've designed it as a downloadable PDF.

Having grown up in a Catholic home, Skip Heitzig wasn’t aware he could have a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. So, when he sat down to watch Rev. Billy Graham preach on TV in 1973, God convicted him of his sin and he became a follower of the Lord. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson interviews Pastor Heitzig of Calvary Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico about his testimony and book entitled The Bible From 30,000 Feet. Taking the acronym FLIGHT, Skip’s book explores the Facts, Landmarks, Itinerary, Gospel, History, and Travel Tips of all 66 books in 52 chapters. 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says, “All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching, rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that the servant of God may be thoroughly equipped for every good work.”

Wade was overturned in 2022, United States Senator Marsha Blackburn was one of the many federal legislators who were encouraged that states and local governments can now be in a position to better protect babies. The crisis of pornography is ground zero for all those concerned with the well-being of loved ones, communities, and society as a whole. On today’s classic edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson interviews Patrick Trueman, the president of The National Center on Sexual Exploitation, to discuss its damaging effects. Viewing pornography actually alters the brain and "lights the fire trail" for increased desire and progressive consumption. But there is hope in taking back our nation's hearts and minds.

In his 20’s, JP Pokluda drove a Jaguar, lived in a high-rise condo, and loved the club scene. By his own admission, he was a materialistic alcoholic who was addicted to sex and pornography. On today’s edition of Family Talk, JP shares how God radically transformed him, calling him to a liberating life of holiness. In his new book entitled Why Do I Do What I Don’t Want to Do? JP invites fellow believers to counter their lust with self-control, their pride with humility, their anger with forgiveness, and their greed with generosity. Heed the call of Romans 12:2 – “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

When most Christian singles date, they often follow the road of secular culture. They put emotions ahead of biblical principles. On today’s edition of Family Talk, JP Pokluda, senior pastor of Harris Creek Baptist Church, points to 1 Timothy 4:12, which says, “Set an example for the believers in speech, in conduct, in love, in faith, and in purity.” The author of Outdated: Find Love That Lasts When Dating Has Changed says you should date someone long enough to examine those same five attributes. Does the person you are interested in act and speak in a God-honoring way? Is he or she committed to purity before marriage?

During His earthly ministry, Jesus reached out to the marginalized of His day – the lepers, the Samaritans, and the tax collectors. Inspired by Jesus’ example, Frank Pavone has led Priests for Life for 30 years to save today’s most vulnerable, the pre-born. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Pavone points out that if Jesus is Lord of human life, then babies in the womb are sacred. And, by definition, the mother, the father, the doctor, and the government should all affirm God’s highest creation. Matthew 25:40 says, “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’”

In November 2022, Frank Pavone was notified by the Vatican that he was “defrocked” and officially removed from the priesthood. As a result, he could no longer be referred to as “Father,” or publicly celebrate Mass in Catholic churches. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson and Pavone discuss the implications of his removal, and why he now has a renewed interest and commitment to fight for the sanctity of life. 1 Corinthians 15:58 says, “Therefore, my dear brothers and sisters, stand firm. Let nothing move you. Always give yourselves fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain.”

In 1999, Carol Kent was living a happy life with her husband, Gene, until they received a phone call at 12:35 a.m. that changed everything. Their son, Jason, a promising Naval Academy graduate, was arrested and charged with first-degree murder. After he received a life sentence without parole, Carol discovered what it meant to live between a rock and a grace place. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Carol shares that, like the Apostle Paul who asked for the thorn in his flesh to be removed, God’s grace is sufficient for her too.
