Mom Strong - II

March 11, 2021

When moms feel broken and burdened by feelings of inadequacy, Heidi St. John, author of Bible Promises for Moms, reminds us that God’s strength is made perfect in our weakness. Heidi’s book provides Scriptural counsel on 80 alphabetical topics ranging from depression and discipline to weariness and worry. She urges women to network with other Christian moms with whom they can be vulnerable, because Satan loves an isolated target.

Bringing Up Boys
With so much confusion about the role of men in society, it’s no wonder we have questions about how to bring up boys in the right way. Why are so many young males in crisis? What qualities should we be instilling in our sons? The culture has vilified masculinity, and as a result, an entire generation of boys is growing up without a clear idea of what it means to be a man. To help parents confront this challenge, the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute has developed a new 10-day email series based on Dr. Dobson’s best-selling book, Bringing Up Boys. It’s designed to equip you to wisely lead your sons to become godly men.

Between the isolation of COVID-19 and the craziness in our culture, moms today can feel disconnected and overwhelmed. Heidi St. John, author of Becoming MomStrong, reminds mothers to get into God’s Word, because we can't pass along to our kids what we don't possess ourselves. While the world has attempted to hijack motherhood and relegate it to little more than a stopover on the highway of life, parents need to see this season as precious and fleeting.

Has learning become a burdensome chore for your children—and an ongoing frustration for you as a parent, as well? In today’s edition of Family Talk, Cheri Fuller, author of Motivating Your Kids from Crayons to Careers, reminds parents that their own curiosity about the world around them can be infectious. She suggests engaging with your kids about their particular interests, talking about your Christian faith walk, sharing your experiences growing up, and possibly interviewing their grandparents, too. Doing so will help unwrap your child’s God-given gifts and ignite an unquenchable passion for learning.

Young children have a God-inspired curiosity about the world around them, typically prompting a flood of questions. But with parents busier than ever, the danger is that we either ignore these questions or belittle them. Cheri Fuller, author of Motivating Your Kids from Crayons to Careers, urges parents to affirm their child’s desire to learn—and, if you don’t readily know the answer to his or her question, look it up together.

Fern Nichols was at her wit’s end, trying to deal with a rebellious, wayward son. Though in despair because of Ty’s worldly choices, she stayed on her knees in prayer for him. A former teacher and founder of Moms in Prayer International, Fern understood the power of Deuteronomy 3:22, which declares, “Do not be afraid; the Lord your God Himself will fight for you.” Thankfully, Ty was transformed by her prayers and God’s love, which brought him to repentance.

Some people feel constricted by God’s rules, fearful that they’ll be missing out on living the “good life.” But in this Part 2 edition, humorist Ken Davis draws from his personal experience as a pilot in explaining that unless he abides by and respects the rules of aviation, he can’t expect a successful flight. Similarly, a man wedded to his compass truly has the freedom of the sea. And ironically, obeying God’s “rule book” isn’t constrictive but actually liberating!

When Christian humorist Ken Davis was in high school, it was painfully obvious that he didn’t fit in, especially with the “popular” kids. By his own description, he had the hand-eye coordination of a carp. But after excelling at public speaking, he learned that he could live with having nothing to prove because his value as a person was forever established on the cross of Jesus Christ. Now he wants you to have the same level of peace.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Erwin Lutzer, author of We Will Not Be Silenced: Responding Courageously to Our Culture’s Assault on Christianity, continues his discussion with Dr. Tim Clinton about how the secular left wants to advance “cultural Marxism” in America. A key component is the sexualization of children through the public schools and the media. This will lead to more premarital sex, abortions, children born out of wedlock, and ultimately more of our kids becoming susceptible to Marxist principles.

The secular left doesn’t believe that America can be repaired. Instead, they say it must be destroyed and then replaced. But with what? We know that they are sympathetic to a “cultural Marxism” which would curb free speech, increase government control, destroy the nuclear family, and be hostile toward Christianity. But Dr. Erwin Lutzer, author of We Will Not Be Silenced: Responding Courageously to Our Culture’s Assault on Christianity, urges Christians to advocate for truth with gentleness.

Is the family becoming an endangered species? It is in some of America’s inner cities. According to the National Vital Statistics Report, published by the CDC, in 2015 over 70% of African-American children were born out of wedlock. Of the remaining 30%, half will likely lose their fathers to divorce or abandonment. Former NFL player Steve Fitzhugh’s passion is to reach out to and teach kids who are surrounded by a culture of drugs, violence, and futility—and to help them understand that God has an amazing plan for their lives.

Many of today’s parents have been misled by the culture into believing that their job is to produce the next Mozart or champion athlete, and have lost sight of the idea that the family is God’s workshop for building men and women of character. Author John Rosemond explains why parents should limit TV and excessive toys, and focus on instilling respect, responsibility, and resourcefulness in their children.
