Finding Jesus on the Streets - II

September 7, 2022

You would think that the hosts of a church breakfast would invite a homeless man sitting in front of their steps to enjoy a hearty meal. However, when 20-year-old Mike Yankoski decided to conduct a social experiment and chose to be homeless for five months to see the church’s response, he was instead told to leave. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Yankoski, the author of Under the Overpass, shares that when he attended that same church the following Sunday, the man who chased him away asked for forgiveness through tears. Mike urges the church to follow Christ’s example and love the unattractive, and the unlovable, including the homeless.

Did you know that there are over half a million Americans who are homeless? Can you imagine what it’s like to live on the streets? No bed or shower. No easy way to get food or a job. On today’s classic edition of Family Talk, Mike Yankoski, the author of Under the Overpass, shares with Dr. James Dobson his experience of going undercover to learn how the homeless community lives. Throughout his five-month journey, he lost 25 pounds, grew his hair and beard, and eventually repelled people by his body odor. As Mike ate out of the trash, was ignored, and even witnessed a violent encounter, he felt dehumanized and disgusting. His experience gave him increased Christ-life compassion for those who really are homeless.

Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train a child up in the way he should go, and when he is old, he will not depart from it.” Parents have a crucial obligation and responsibility to impart wisdom and sound advice to their kids. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Rick Rigsby boldly declares that the best wisdom he received was from his father, who was a third grade dropout. Rick was told to show up an hour early, be kind to people and that if he did a job, then do it right. The advice of Rigsby’s father has stayed with Rick to this day.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson and Rabbi Jonathan Cahn continue to discuss Rabbi Cahn’s new book, The Return of the Gods. You’ll hear more details about the Dark Trinity, comprised of Baal, Ishtar, and Molech. Following Baal, the god of apostasy, Ishtar, the goddess of sexual perversion has led America down a road of pornography and sexual immorality. Finally, just as Molech enticed ancient Israelites to sacrifice their children in the fire, we have sacrificed our children through the atrocity of abortion.

According to Rabbi Jonathan Cahn, America’s disturbing rejection of the one true God has opened the door for the return of the ancient gods. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson and Cahn discuss the research and findings in his new book, The Return of the Gods. Rabbi Cahn explains that the presence of the Dark Trinity — comprised of Baal, Ishtar, and Molech—on American soil has led to our embrace of wicked practices. Ephesians 6:12 warns, “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places.”

Pro-life advocate Melissa Ohden never thought her life would have such a strong purpose or silver lining. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Melissa, the founder of Abortion Survivors Network, recounts that she was miraculously born alive after an attempted late-term saline abortion failed to kill her. After her birth, Melissa was fortunately adopted by loving parents. As she grew older, she began a journey to reunite with her birth parents and offer forgiveness. Because of Melissa’s testimony, she is able to minister forgiveness and healing to others who have survived their own attempted abortions.

To any outside observer, Larry Wright was a success. The Phoenix rock ‘n roll disc jockey had paid for an upscale home, nice cars, and provided a comfortable life for his wife, Sue, and their three kids. But on today’s edition of Family Talk, you’ll hear how Larry and Sue’s marriage almost ended in divorce. After Sue became a Christian, she exemplified 1 Peter 3:1, which challenges wives to win their husbands to Christ by their selfless conduct. Larry’s hardened heart was miraculously softened to God’s redemption, and the once-harsh disciplinarian was transformed into a loving father whose relationship with his children was restored.

He eventually stopped trying to find purpose in his bank account and at the bottom of a bottle, and invited Jesus into his heart.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Ken Harrison, the author of A Daring Faith in a Cowardly World, urges Christians to have the courage of their convictions. He explains we should boldly and lovingly share Scripture, not our opinion, with those walking in sin, urging them to repent. The reason God didn’t send us to Heaven upon our profession of faith is because He has a plan for us to accomplish while here on earth. Philippians 3:14 declares, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

After a serious jet ski accident, Ken Harrison, the chairman and CEO of Promise Keepers, was told he had ruptured his liver and might have five hours to live. Romans 2:6 flashed before his eyes. It says that God “will repay each one according to his works.” On today’s edition of Family Talk, the author of A Daring Faith in a Cowardly World, reminds Christians that Ephesians 2:10 declares that Christ created us to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Knowing that the Lord will reward us in Heaven with special crowns and responsibilities, the key is to live a life without regrets while serving Him.

According to Ben Roethlisberger, “Football is not who I am, it’s what I do.” He spent the first four decades of his life becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks in football history. But for the next 40 years, he wants to further expand God's kingdom. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the two-time Super Bowl champion and former quarterback of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, highlights his favorite football moments and shares the importance of faith and family, and his plans for life in retirement, including the mission to start a new foundation.
