Bringing Up Boys
With so much confusion about the role of men in society, it’s no wonder we have questions about how to bring up boys in the right way. Why are so many young males in crisis? What qualities should we be instilling in our sons? The culture has vilified masculinity, and as a result, an entire generation of boys is growing up without a clear idea of what it means to be a man. To help parents confront this challenge, the Dr. James Dobson Family Institute has developed a new 10-day email series based on Dr. Dobson’s best-selling book, Bringing Up Boys. It’s designed to equip you to wisely lead your sons to become godly men.

When Cleopas and his wife talked to Jesus on the road to Emmaus that first Easter morning, initially they didn’t recognize Him. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Pastor Clayton King surmises what prompted them to finally recognize their Savior. After Jesus led his followers in that unique 7-mile-long Bible study, He broke bread, passing it to them with His palm facing upward, and they saw for the first time His nail-scarred wrists. Have your eyes and hearts been open to the Lord just as Cleopas and his wife’s were in Luke 24?

For the past two years, we’ve all had a lot on our plates. Skyrocketing inflation. Political upheaval. And, of course, the dreaded COVID pandemic. Some of us are frustrated and anxious, thinking that we have missed our moment in life. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Pastor Clayton King brings a message of encouragement. He preaches from Luke 24, where Jesus appeared to two of His downcast followers, Cleopas and his wife, on their walk to Emmaus. Jesus had just risen from the dead, yet they were unaware, and thus, despondent. Rather than dramatically announce His resurrection in downtown Jerusalem for all to see, Jesus personally revealed the Good News to these two obscure followers. He will lift your countenance as well.

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Jonathan Evans and his wife, Kanika, continue discussing his new book, Fighting Your Battles: Every Christian’s Playbook for Victory, as well as their personal testimony of enduring four miscarriages. The parents of five children, Jonathan and Kanika share that through their trials, they learned to hold on to their faith and depend fully on the Lord. Jesus says, “Come to Me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from Me. For My yoke is easy and My burden is light.” Jonathan notes that you know you’ve given your burden to God when you’re no longer trying to manipulate the outcome.

Within two short years, Jonathan Evans, the son of Dr. Tony Evans, and his wife, Kanika, lost eight members of their family, including Jonathan’s beloved mother, Lois. Their deaths shook the couple to their core. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Jonathan, a former NFL fullback, concludes that the Lord allows such trials in our lives not to pull us apart, but to push the Body of Christ together. Just like 9/11 united America, our hardships unite the community and produce perseverance. In his new book, Fighting Your Battles: Every Christian’s Playbook for Victory, Jonathan proclaims our greatest ministry will come out of our greatest misery.

According to Rita Schulte (SHOOL-tee), her high school sweetheart, Mike, was “superman.” Not only was he an accomplished dentist, but a loving husband and father who was involved in several ministries and led Bible studies. But, after developing and battling paranoia and insomnia, Mike became clinically depressed and took his own life. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Rita shares that in the weeks and months after her husband’s death, it felt like a bomb went off in her life. She was non-functional and drowning in guilt. As Rita began the healing process, she learned the key was not to focus on what happened to her, but to examine what the Lord was doing in and through her.

The walking wounded are all around us. They’re propped up by their wealth, their beauty, and their success. However, under the surface, they're not only hurting, but they’re in a fog. Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder is a spiritual wound. That’s the contention of Chad Robichaux (Row-ba-show), a retired U.S. Marine who served eight tours of duty in Afghanistan. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Chad explains that his crippling panic attacks were God-sent, a way for his body to cope with trauma. Today, he counsels people with PTSD to recognize that medication should be a pitstop on the road to recovery, not the destination. The antidote is the peace of God through a relationship with Christ and solid biblical counseling which does not assign blame.
