A Daring Faith in a Cowardly World - II

August 26, 2022

On today’s edition of Family Talk, Ken Harrison, the author of A Daring Faith in a Cowardly World, urges Christians to have the courage of their convictions. He explains we should boldly and lovingly share Scripture, not our opinion, with those walking in sin, urging them to repent. The reason God didn’t send us to Heaven upon our profession of faith is because He has a plan for us to accomplish while here on earth. Philippians 3:14 declares, “I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus.

After a serious jet ski accident, Ken Harrison, the chairman and CEO of Promise Keepers, was told he had ruptured his liver and might have five hours to live. Romans 2:6 flashed before his eyes. It says that God “will repay each one according to his works.” On today’s edition of Family Talk, the author of A Daring Faith in a Cowardly World, reminds Christians that Ephesians 2:10 declares that Christ created us to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do. Knowing that the Lord will reward us in Heaven with special crowns and responsibilities, the key is to live a life without regrets while serving Him.

According to Ben Roethlisberger, “Football is not who I am, it’s what I do.” He spent the first four decades of his life becoming one of the greatest quarterbacks in football history. But for the next 40 years, he wants to further expand God's kingdom. On today’s edition of Family Talk, the two-time Super Bowl champion and former quarterback of the NFL’s Pittsburgh Steelers, highlights his favorite football moments and shares the importance of faith and family, and his plans for life in retirement, including the mission to start a new foundation. Standing 6 feet, 5 inches tall, “Big Ben” reveals that the manliest thing a dad can do is be vulnerable with his kids.

Have you ever thought about the almighty power contained in a simple hymn? Have you felt the promise delivered in the lyrics of your favorite classic gospel song? For over 50 years, Joni (pronounced Johnny) Eareckson Tada has been confined to her wheelchair after a diving accident. On today’s edition of Family Talk, she shares that she often awakes feeling burdened with the struggle. But when Joni reads her Bible and sings a hymn, she gains an eternal perspective. Inevitably, God fills her with a fresh outpouring of His grace and an incomprehensible joy. In their book, O Worship the King: Hymns of Praise and Assurance to Encourage Your Heart, Joni and her co-authors, Robert Wolgemuth and his late wife, Bobbie, point to the treasure trove that the body of Christ has in the ancient hymns.

When Joni (pronounced Johnny) Eareckson Tada broke her neck in 1967 and became a quadriplegic, she languished in her hospital bed for a year. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Joni shares that during that time, she was encouraged when her friend visited her and sang the hymn “Man of Sorrows.” The lyrics proclaim, “Man of sorrows, what a name, for the Son of God, Who came, ruined sinners to reclaim: Hallelujah! What a Savior!” Singing hymns, rich with theological meaning, throughout the day is a way to pray without ceasing and exude the joy of Jesus to those around us.

In a world that celebrates grievous sins and punishes biblical truth, the need for a solid Christian college education has never been more vital. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Donald Sweeting, chancellor and former president of Colorado Christian University, continues highlighting the importance of a Christian education and urges young people, like the wise man in Scripture, to build their lives upon the rock of Jesus Christ. Even though the government threatens to strip financial aid from students who attend God-honoring schools like Colorado Christian University, now is the time to act courageously.

Proverbs 1:7 declares that “the fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.” On today’s edition of Family Talk, Dr. Donald Sweeting, chancellor and former president of Colorado Christian University, explains that this biblical concept is foundational. In the face of our culture’s embrace of moral relativism, the CCU faculty unapologetically affirms the pursuit of Truth. The university boldly teaches competence in the context of developing character through a Christ-centered faith. It’s no wonder they’ve witnessed thirteen consecutive years of record enrollment in the face of a dramatic nine percent decline of universities nationwide.

If the prayer of a righteous man is powerful and effective, how much more potent are the prayers of moms who gather to intercede on behalf of their children? On today’s edition of Family Talk, Fern Nichols and Sally Burke, the founder and president of Moms in Prayer International, continue sharing about their ministry, and urge mothers to walk through the four steps of prayer: praise, silent confession, thanksgiving, and intercession. Matthew 18:20 declares, “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.”

In 1984, Fern Nichols was fearful about sending her two eldest children off to junior high. Realizing that the spiritual warfare would be intense, she asked another mother to pray with her for their kids' protection. That was the humble beginning of Moms in Prayer International, a ministry which now has groups in all 50 states and 140 countries worldwide. On today’s edition of Family Talk, Fern compares the efforts of the four friends in the book of Mark, chapter two, who opened a hole in the roof to get a paralyzed man to Jesus. With the heart behind Moms in Prayer, mothers have a similar desperation and determination to bring their children before Christ in prayer.

On June 25, 1962, the Supreme Court ruled that school sponsored prayer was unconstitutional. But did you know that Christians still have the ability to bring biblical teaching and the gospel to school-aged kids during the school day? On today’s edition of Family Talk, Kori Pennypacker, the CEO of Bible2School, shares the mission behind her program and explains how concerned Christians and parents can aid in bringing the Bible to children in their communities. Proverbs 22:6 says, “Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old, he will not depart from it."

Keeping the initial interest and spark alive in a marriage can be difficult to accomplish. What is the mysterious “it” factor that everyone seems to be after? On today’s classic edition of Family Talk, Dr. James Dobson and author Jean Lush advise women on how to keep their “feminine mystique” strong by fostering their intellect, confidence, and health. Proverbs 31:10-11 says, “Who can find a virtuous wife? For her worth is far more than rubies.”
