The covenant that God made with Israel at Mount Sinai was a conditional one. If they obeyed, He would continue to bless them. The people promised to obey, but they would have to eat their words.

At Mount Sinai, God told the people that He would make them a holy nation, if they would obey Him and keep His covenant. And the Israelites said they would do all that God had commanded.

In Exodus 18, Moses is confronted by his father-in-law Jethro. Jethro tells Moses that he is wearing himself out by leading the people all by himself. He recommends that Moses appoint a team to help him judge the people.

In the wilderness, Moses faced confrontation from within and from outside the camp. The people were ready to stone him because they needed water. And the Amalekites attacked the Israelites.

The children of Israel were on a 40-year road trip, but in spite of God's gracious provision and protection, they were never satisfied! They had to learn that when there is no way, God can make a way.

The manna in Exodus 16 is like the Word of God. It was supernaturally given, and it had to be gathered daily. And it is a type of Jesus Christ — Jesus said “I am the living bread which came down from heaven.”

Each day, the Israelites were to gather only enough manna to feed themselves for that day. They had to trust that God would provide for them.

At first, the Israelites celebrated their deliverance, but then they looked back to Egypt. In the midst of their grumbling, the Lord showered them with grace and rained manna from heaven.

When the Israelites were without water in the wilderness, God miraculously made some bitter waters sweet. God may lead us into difficult places, but that’s because He wants us to live by faith, and not by sight.
