Exodus 17-18, Part 3

In Exodus 18, Moses is confronted by his father-in-law Jethro. Jethro tells Moses that he is wearing himself out by leading the people all by himself. He recommends that Moses appoint a team to help him judge the people.

The manna in Exodus 16 is like the Word of God. It was supernaturally given, and it had to be gathered daily. And it is a type of Jesus Christ — Jesus said “I am the living bread which came down from heaven.”

Each day, the Israelites were to gather only enough manna to feed themselves for that day. They had to trust that God would provide for them.

At first, the Israelites celebrated their deliverance, but then they looked back to Egypt. In the midst of their grumbling, the Lord showered them with grace and rained manna from heaven.

When the Israelites were without water in the wilderness, God miraculously made some bitter waters sweet. God may lead us into difficult places, but that’s because He wants us to live by faith, and not by sight.

True worship is a response to what God has done for us. Worship is to be focused upon God, and upon Him exclusively. And true worship involves not only verbal praise, but also lifting out hands in surrender to Him.

When the children of Israel were delivered from bondage in Egypt and their enemies were destroyed, they responded with songs of praise. Exodus 15 shows us some important characteristics of true worship.

The crossing of the Red Sea is the pivotal point in Israel’s history. It showed that God would be their protection. As Moses said, “The LORD will fight for you, and you shall hold your peace."

Why did God lead His people through the wilderness? It was to teach them that they were weak, and they needed to depend on Him for everything, for food, for protection, and for direction.
