September 13, 2007
God's plan is always to save a person, and then to do more with them. After Paul's conversion to faith in Christ, he had to be prepared for service to the Lord. He spent time praying, in fellowship with other believers, and then preaching that Jesus was the Messiah. But in the process, the former hunter of Christians became the target of the Jewish leaders.

When Jesus confronted Paul on the road to Damascus, he said that Paul was persecuting Him, not His followers. In a moment, Paul understood both that Jesus was Lord, and that it was useless to resist Him. And he asked this vital question: "Lord, what do you want me to do?"

As a rabbi living in Jerusalem, Saul of Tarsus was an angry zealot who was trying to stop the disciples of Jesus Christ, and doing it in the name of his God. Saul of Tarsus was proud of his heritage, a very religious, devoutly spiritual rabbi, and a Pharisee. He was trained in the Jewish faith by the greatest rabbi of his time—and he was so upright that he could call himself blameless according to the law. Yet later in life he said he counted all these things as rubbish.

What changed Saul of Tarsus from a tyrant into Paul the Apostle, the evangelist to the Gentiles? To understand the story of this unique individual, Skip asks us to take off our 21st century glasses that see Paul as a Christian preacher, and to put on first century glasses to see him as a Jewish man in a Greco-Roman culture.

Jesus commands us that, when dealing with sin in the church, we are to confront the person directly, both to restore that person to fellowship, and to purify the church. It's difficult and at times unpleasant, but, as Proverbs 27:6 says, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend." Tomorrow begins a new series, Paul’s Long Road to Rome.
