Why would God allow Stephen, one of the early church's best men, to be executed for professing his faith in Jesus Christ? One part of the answer is that He was preparing for the eventual salvation of Paul the Apostle. Paul never forgot the sight of the execution, and it would haunt him for the rest of his life.

As a rabbi living in Jerusalem, Saul of Tarsus was an angry zealot who was trying to stop the disciples of Jesus Christ, and doing it in the name of his God. He would have been voted “most unlikely to convert to Christianity.” He went from just observing the persecution of the church, to consenting to it, to actively participating in it, to a deep, hate-filled desire to lay waste to the faith.

Saul of Tarsus was proud of his heritage, a very religious, devoutly spiritual rabbi, and a Pharisee. He was trained in the Jewish faith by the greatest rabbi of his time—and he was so upright that he could call himself blameless according to the law. Yet later in life he said he counted all these things as rubbish.

Jesus commands us that, when dealing with sin in the church, we are to confront the person directly, both to restore that person to fellowship, and to purify the church. It's difficult and at times unpleasant, but, as Proverbs 27:6 says, "Faithful are the wounds of a friend." Tomorrow begins a new series, Paul’s Long Road to Rome.
