The Faith of Abraham Part 1

November 18, 2022

Today we’re going to recall the faith of Abraham.  As you’ll soon see, he believed God could to the impossible and had hope in the midst of a hopeless situation.  And maybe the timing in all this couldn’t be better, as the circumstances surrounding you are screaming… It’s impossible or there’s no hope!  See what God has to say to us about that, as you join pastor John Randall in Romans chapter four.

There are a large number of people today that are under the illusion that they can gain a right standing with God through their good behavior.  Ask them a question like, “Are you going to heaven when you die?”  And they might say something like, “I think so, I’m a pretty good person.”  Today we open our Bibles to Romans chapter four, and see the truth about our salvation.   We’re all made righteous through trust in Christ alone, and not by anything we have done.

One of the most fascinating and well-known persons in the Bible is Abraham. Yes he lived long ago but his story still speaks to us today, providing great encouragement to trust in Jesus alone for salvation. In Romans chapter four the argument for salvation by grace through faith is made by using the historical account of Abraham. Pastor John Randall will explore this liberating truth of how God not only saved Abraham by faith apart from works but really all of us!

Today we’re going to unwrap the beautiful doctrine of salvation.  We’re guilty sinners, with no way to become righteous on our own.  But God provided a solution to our problem.  While being Just, He at the same time justifies the guilty sinner through the work of Jesus on the cross.

Pastor John Randall is taking us through Romans one verse at a time, and we visit chapter three once again today.  Verses 21-31 describe the doctrine of salvation.  We’ve learned previously that it’s impossible for us to live up to the standard of the law.  We’re all sinners, and can’t possibly earn our way into heaven.  So where does that leave us?  Is there any hope?  I’m glad to say there is, in Jesus.  And Romans makes that clear.  We’re justified freely by grace.

In the Great Tribulation the world will be at a place where it esteems commercialism and materialism higher than the voice of God.  And doesn’t that sound familiar to our day?  God will eventually say enough is enough, and destroy this commercial system.  When all this goes down, there will be quite  a striking difference in the reaction between heaven and earth, as we’re about to see.  Pastor John Randall frames today’s talk around Revelation eighteen, where we find the destruction of commercial Babylon.

Are you among the many who feel you have to do more than just believe in Jesus and receive His free gift of salvation? Consider this - what more could be done than what Jesus has already done?  I’m reminded of the hymn that proclaims. “All to Him I owe - sin has left a crimson stain - He washes white as snow.” I suspect the writer of that familiar verse - could have received some inspiration from Romans chapter three - the passage in front of us today. And for some inspiration of our own join Pastor John Randall as he focuses on the depravity of man, and the answer to our problem.

Today we begin Romans chapter three which reveals the total depravity of man! And our great need for Jesus and God’s grace.

In his letter to the Romans, Paul was adamant about our position in Christ, that we are saved by grace and grace alone. He declared that our status here on earth - social or otherwise - has absolutely no bearing on our position in heaven. This was a hard lesson for the Jews to grasp, as they were taught to regard their status as higher than the lowly Gentiles around them. Grab that Bible of yours and open it up to Romans chapter two and follow along with us as John Randall shows us that nothing can save us apart from Christ.

Have you ever gone in front of a mirror and used that mirror to wash the dirt off of you?  Of course not. The law is much like a mirror, it can only show us our sin, it can’t cleanse us of it.  Yet too many seek to live under the law expecting they can perform it. That only leads to hypocrisy and judgmentalism. There’s a better way - a way that actually works!  Today on a Daily Walk we take you to Romans chapter two and see together what that is.

Maybe you’ve noticed, we’re pretty good at making excuses to justify our bad behavior.  But we’re all too quick to come down hard on others who do the very same thing. This sort of self-deception and self-righteousness was present in the heart of the people we’ll read about today in Romans chapter two.  Pastor John Randall is in the early stages of a new series in Romans. And it’s been emphasizing that we’re made right with God by faith in the finished work of Jesus on the cross.
