Beware of Worldly Friendships

But Amnon had a friend whose name was Jonadab the son of Shimeah, David’s brother. Now Jonadab was a very crafty man. And he said to him, “Why are you, the king’s son, becoming thinner day after day? Will you not tell me?” - 2 Samuel 13:3-4

Notice, Amnon had a friend Jonadab, a nephew of David who was described as being crafty. He could clearly see that something was wrong with Amnon and wanted to find out about the situation. What was causing him to waste away? However, he was not a true friend. He would soon give him very bad counsel.

Worldly friends have no spiritual perspective or godly advice. Understand they do not love you, using the wisdom of this world they will lead you astray. How many times have you been lead to compromise or sin through the bad counsel of an ungodly friend? They will do what is right in their own eyes and destroy your life. Listen to wise counsel: Do not be wise in your own eyes; fear the Lordand depart from evil (Proverbs 3:7).

A true friend will listen to your problems and then give good biblical advice. They will even rebuke you if necessary and warn you of the consequences of your bad choices. These kinds of friends are loyal and love you enough to hurt you. Proverb 27:6 tells us: Faithful are the wounds of a friend, but the kisses of an enemy are deceitful.

Be careful who you keep company with, choose your friends wisely.1 Corinthians 15:33 is a Scripture that contains a strong warning: Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.”

Nothing is more dangerous than associating with the ungodly.
