The Cross Is Foolishness

May 13, 2016
God designed things so that He gets all the glory in everything. He used the cross, which seemed foolish to the world, to save all those who believe. He draws the seemingly foolish and weak because they admit their need for Him freely which then brings Him glory.

Just as an earthly parent disciplines their children, God disciplines us when we make mistakes. All of our mistakes have consequences, but God gives us those consequences so that we can learn and move forward. If we’re experiencing consequences over the same thing, we must learn from our mistakes and move on.

Religion requires us to attain knowledge and apply it to our lives so that our behavior changes. God offers us so much more than that when He comes into our lives and makes the words that we read in Scripture dwell in our hearts and change us from the inside out.

Our lives are marked by millstones and milestones. Millstones are moments of our lives where we have made a tragic mistake. Milestones are those monumental times that something great has happened. When we are discipled by another, they can help our millstones turn into milestones so that we can then help others, expanding the Kingdom of God.

When difficult circumstances come we often automatically think that it is the devil that is at work but it can actually be God at work in us. He has to be inside already in order to work in us and through us so our first step is to let Him in, then allow Him to do His work.

There are many women who have lost a child, either by their own sin of choosing to give up that life or by other causes. Though it should not be the reasoning for becoming a Christian so as to see a child who has passed from this world to be with God, there is hope for mothers who follow Christ that they will once again be reunited with their children who have gone to be with the Lord.

Our love for God is what should motivate us to do things for Him, not guilt. If we do things out of guilt we will end up quitting, but if we serve Him out of love for Him then we will continue with an attitude of joy. When we understand that God loves us, we cannot help but love Him back and love others as well.

As Christians, we should look different than the rest of the world. In order to do that we should be cognizant of what we are putting into our minds by what we see and hear, and what we are letting out of our mouths. However, even after all our own efforts, the only thing that will save us is faith in Jesus.

No matter how much rest we get physically, our souls need rest as well. The only place to find rest for our souls is in Jesus, not in religious loads of rules. When we do things God’s way we will have rest at the end of any situation more than we did before we began.

During the Holocaust, concentration camps were located in or by cities and the people who lived in those cities turned their heads and did nothing out of fear of being against society. Nowadays, millions of murders take place and we find ourselves turning our heads and doing nothing. God calls us to fight for the innocent lives that have been taken by abortion.

When Jesus moves in our hearts when we become Christians, He cleans us up from the inside out. It’s not about following all the rules and modifying our behavior as much as it is allowing Him full access to clean us up and transform us.

About Richard Ellis

Authentic... Genuine... Sincere... This guy is the real deal. He loves God. He loves his wife Rebecca and his 3 daughters. He loves people. He loves his job. He loves Texas BBQ. He loves an occasional round of golf. And he loves the Dallas Cowboys (but don’t hold that against him!).

Richard grew up as a missionary kid in Brazil, coming back to the states to finish his education. He graduated from Baylor University in 1982 with a BA in Oral Communications, and earned his MDIV in 1985 from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, making him the sixth generation of pastors in his family. His early days of ministry included serving for three years as the Single Adults Pastor at the First Baptist Church of Dallas.

Then in 1997, Richard Ellis founded Reunion Church, a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, non-denominational church in the heart of Dallas,Texas. Dallas needed a church like it. And it would need a pastor like Richard. So Reunion Church was born. And now the radio show and the website (www.RichardEllisTalks.com) join the Reunion Church community under the leadership of this guy. And we’re all the better for it!
