Asking for Mercy From Our God

Our only hope as a nation is a national spiritual revival. That will not come unless God sends it. That is why we need to pray and ask for God's mercy on our country and people. Only a visitation from God is going to heal our land. Divorcing ourselves from God as a nation and a people will only reap disaster. We should never listen to those who want to completely secularize the nation. They are wrong. We need God. We cannot survive as a people without Him. We can learn from Daniel's prayer. He was praying for a nation and a people. Our nation is not Israel but we can learn some principles from this prayer that apply to our nation today.

While our political and government leaders haggle over the economy and almost totally disregard our great sins as a people, we must get on our knees and pray and stand in the gap lest we as a people and a nation are destroyed as sinful nations in the past have been. Daniel could have remained silent but he didn't. He pleaded with God to have mercy on His people and land and nation.

Some think our nation is exempt from God's judgment. We sin and then we ask God to bless America. We act as if we deserve God's blessing. Yet, we fail to realize that whatever blessings we have received as a nation have come upon us because of the generations who have gone before us who feared God. We are reaping what others have sowed in this land. Yet, that time of reaping is coming to an end. Judgment is already upon us because of our great sins and will continue if we do not repent as a people.

A nation that sins against God is covered with shame. Daniel was not afraid to admit the shame of his people. They were punished because of their great sins against God. Today, our great sins shame us as a people. The greater shame is that we are not repenting of our sins and God's judgement upon us has already begun.

Prayer for a nation must begin with confession of sin. Today, we as a nation are not acknowledging our great sins as a people. That's our problem. God sends his warning judgments against us in different ways and we don't recognize them as calling us to repent of our sins. Are we not dealing falsely with our God when we refuse to acknowledge Him and confess and repent of our naional sins. Why should we expect Him to bless America under such terms? If we rebel against our God, He will bfring judgment upon us and the world will know that this nation was judged because of its great disobedience and rebellion against God.

We hear very little about conviction of sin in our churches today. Preachers don't preach on such topics much. Yet, this is the problem with our society. We are sinners and don't realize it. We think we are righteous but we need to know that we are not. We are sinners and our sins come up befoe God everyday and they stink in his nostrils. That's what we as a society need to realize. Our greatest need as a nation is to know that we are sinners. We need to be humbled to realize our great need. Otherwise, we will never seek the rememdy for our sickness as a people.

One of the greatest needs of our nation today is the powerful preaching of the Word of God. Today, where is the powerful preaching of the Word and people coming under great convictgion and turning to the Lord in great numberrs? That's what happens in times of true revival. Haggai preached with great power and fear came upon the people for he was sent from God with the mesage of God for the people. Today, we need God's message and God's messenger to come upon us in mighty power.

What we need to be praying for as a nation today is not a better economy. What we need to be praying for as a people is that God would change our hearts to know and honor Him. Once that happens the economy will get better as God once again blesses us as a people. We cannot expect God's blessing upon a people who continually dishonor and rebel against Him. We as a people need a new heart.

This nation is not exempt from perishing. No nation that forsakes God will long survive. Our only hope is a national spiritual revival. Our nation has been in a state of moral and spiritual decline before and God sent great revivals to bring it back. He can do that again and we pray that He will.

We need to go back to the foundation. We have gotten ourselves into a great mess. We have perverted God's foundation and rebelled against him through our actions. Now, we need to realize that and to turn around before its too late. This message is a call for repentance.

When the Holy Spirit is poured out, powerful preaching results. Today, powerful preaching has been put aside for lectures and talks from the pulpit. Powerful preachers are few and far between. There is a drought of the Word of God in the land. When the Holy Spirit comes in power, powerful preaching will return. When the Holy Spirit returns in power, God will raise up powerful preachers to call this nation to repentance. May the Lord raise up another George Whitefield to set this nation on fire and bring it to its knees by the power of the Holy Spirit.
