Ezekiel 34—36

September 25, 2019

One of the most comforting and meaningful pictures God gives us of Himself is that He is our shepherd. In Ezekiel 34, we visit Israel during a turbulent time. Jerusalem has fallen and false prophets are described as “shepherds who fed themselves”—just the opposite of the Good Shepherd who gives His life for the sheep. What will Ezekiel do? Join us for the answer in this exciting study.

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. As hard as it is to hear, being warned is sometimes the most loving thing someone could do for us. In this study of Ezekiel 33, we’ll see a big warning sign posted by the prophet Ezekiel. Will the people finally listen?

Egypt is mentioned by Ezekiel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, and the Minor Prophets. It plays a major part in the history of Israel, and in its day was a major part in the economy and protection of all the countries that surrounded it. So, what happens when they don’t heed Ezekiel’s warning? Will God destroy this nation when so many lives depend on it?

If you’re not a follower of Jesus, one of the things about the Bible that should make you “sit up and take notice” is the number of prophecies that have actually been fulfilled. Event after event … prediction after prediction … God has foretold His story down to the smallest detail. Today we study one of these prophesies known as the lamentation for Tyre.

When word finally came to Ezekiel that Jerusalem had been destroyed, he turned his attention to the surrounding nations. One of those was Tyre, which was a great and powerful city. When Tyre was destroyed, it seemed like a fulfillment of Ezekiel’s prophecy, but we’ll find out that his prophecy would not be complete for another 300 years.

One of Jesus’ most memorable methods of teaching was through parables. But did you know long before the time Christ, the prophet Ezekiel also used parables to teach God’s people? Dr. J. Vernon McGee shares two of those parables with us from Ezekiel chapters 23 and 24.

“Either the Lord said it or … Ezekiel is lying.” That’s the hard line our teacher Dr. J. Vernon McGee takes as we continue our trek through the entire Word of God. Ezekiel’s messages are harsh, but Dr. McGee warns that we should listen and take heed.

What God has said He will do, He will do. If we had to sum up this study in ten words or less, that’s what we could say. So, hop aboard the Bible Bus as we continue to discover that on every page of Scripture, we glimpse the multi-faceted, multi-dimensional, deep, and trustworthy character of God.

Few things are more precious than to see an abandoned child being welcomed into a loving home. Now they are protected, provided for, loved, and given every chance to be a healthy, happy person. That’s the moving picture we’ll see in Ezekiel 16-18.

Maybe you’ve heard it said that God would rather see you in a storm fighting for your life … in a hospital bed … or in bankruptcy court … than living in disobedience. He’d rather you experience depression or penetrating loneliness if that’s the only place you’ll hear His message—“Come back to Me.” We’ll hear that message loud and clear as our study of Ezekiel continues in chapters 14-16.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. J. Vernon McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
