Bright and Morning Star and the Son of Righteousness

December 20, 2020

Get ready to fight the good fight against legalism in Galatians. When this letter was written, it defended the gospel of Christ from people who wanted to reduce it to rules. Not surprising, Galatians has provided the backbone for several great spiritual revivals around the world. Freedom, we learn, is a serious fight. Allow grace to revolutionize your own life through these seven lessons from Dr. J. Vernon McGee.

Between the birth of Jesus and His baptism, Scripture seems to be silent. Yet upon closer inspection, we find a wealth of information about the activities and events that occurred during the formative years of Jesus’ life.

Christ’s first coming wasn’t for judgment, but to provide a way of peace, reconciling men to God. But His second coming will be for the judgment of all who have forsaken the free offering of salvation that He came to provide the first time.

Scripture speaks of a woman arrayed in purple and scarlet, and on her forehead is written, “Mystery, Babylon the Great.” An angel explains to John that the woman “is that great city which reigns over the kings of the earth.” Some believe that this is a picture of the rebuilding of the great city of Babylon.

Have you ever seen a UFO? Well, there was a man who saw things flying through the air, but he was told exactly what they were. The man was the prophet Zechariah who on one night had ten visions given to him by God.

Usually a funeral is a time of mourning and sorrow, but not with Jesus in attendance. The Bible records three times when Jesus attended a funeral, and each time He turned sorrow into joy and mourning into praise.

When God gave the Law for the nation Israel, He didn’t list every possible application. So then how was a person able to know what the Law was in a certain situation?  Haggai encountered such a case, and the answer he received is true for believers in our day.

About Dr. J. Vernon McGee

John Vernon McGee was born in Hillsboro, Texas, in 1904. Dr. McGee remarked, "When I was born and the doctor gave me the customary whack, my mother said that I let out a yell that could be heard on all four borders of Texas!" His Creator well knew that he would need a powerful voice to deliver a powerful message.

After completing his education (including a Th.M. and Th.D. from Dallas Theological Seminary), he and his wife came west, settling in Pasadena, California. Dr. McGee's greatest pastorate was at the historic Church of the Open Door in downtown Los Angeles, where he served from 1949 to 1970.

He began teaching Thru the Bible in 1967. After retiring from the pastorate, he set up radio headquarters in Pasadena, and the radio ministry expanded rapidly. Listeners never seem to tire of Dr. McGee's unique brand of rubber-meets-the-road teaching, or his passion for teaching the whole Word of God.

On the morning of December 1, 1988, Dr. McGee fell asleep in his chair and quietly passed into the presence of his Savior.
