Thou Shalt Call His Name Jesus

December 24, 2025

When God speaks a name, He reveals a mission. The angel’s words to Joseph were clear and powerful: “You shall call His name Jesus.” Today on The Healing Word, Pastor Jack Morris shares why that name was heaven’s choice—and what it means for every person in need of salvation.

Jack Morris: Now this gift that He gives to you and me, it's a gift that won't wear out, it won't wear down. You'll never have to discard it. It's new life in Jesus; it's abundant life in Christ. It's yours for time; it's yours for eternity.

Guest (Male): When God speaks a name, He reveals a mission. The angel's words to Joseph were clear and powerful: "You shall call His name Jesus." Today on the Healing Word, Pastor Jack Morris shares why that name was Heaven's choice and what it means for every person in need of salvation.

Jack Morris: Thou shalt call His name Jesus. Now this is a beautiful story that has been read today and that I’m looking at with you in Matthew chapter one. A beautiful story, it’s a beautiful love story of a couple, of a man and woman in love.

Their love possessed their soul. Their love is a love story of never-ending duration. Love never ends. That’s what the Bible says, right? Affections will end, lust will end, fondness may end, everything else will end, but not love.

The Bible says that, right? The Bible says love never ends. And here is a couple in love, and love united them into a bonding relationship unbreakable. It’s the story of love on the mountain. These are mountain people, simple people, simple folk, loving each other. Where there is love, there is God because God is love.

You know, there are a lot of homes today God’s not in that home because love’s not in that home. Something happened along the way. But I want you to look at a couple in love, and they had some pretty serious things happen to them, but they kept right on loving each other until the Christ was born—your Savior, I’m talking about, and my Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now in your bulletin, there is an outline, and I want you to write down the word "parents" on the line in point A. The holy parents. Now Joseph was the father of Jesus, the foster father. We know that it was the seed of the Almighty in the womb of the Virgin that brought Jesus about, but in every respect, Joseph was Jesus' dad in that he cared for him, he protected him, he provided for him, he taught him a trade. He was his daddy.

And he was a good daddy, a great man. The Bible says that he was a righteous man in verse 19 of Matthew chapter one—a righteous man. Now what does that mean? He was a righteous man. Today we may not understand those terms and some of those words, but to Israel, to the people of Israel, the ancient Jews, a righteous man was a man who was zealous for the law, the Mosaic law, Moses' law. He kept the law very seriously, he kept the law of Moses.

But now here is Joseph, it says the same thing of Joseph, that he was a righteous man. But Joseph was not cold-hearted; in no way was this man cold-hearted. Righteous, but a man of love, a man of compassion, a man who had feelings.

You see, Joseph felt betrayed by Mary. There was the betrothal, now they were waiting for the marriage, and I’ll get to that and explain that in just a moment. And somewhere between the betrothal and the actual marriage, he felt that Mary had an affair, had sexual relations and become pregnant by another man. He couldn’t believe it.

He just couldn’t believe it. He loved Mary. Now he had every right according to the law, according to the law of Moses, to have her stoned to death. No one would have thought a thing about it, not a thing would they have thought about it. It would have been correct according to Moses' law. It was the thing to do when a person committed adultery and had sex outside of wedlock.

But Joseph couldn’t do it. He was too soft on the inside. He just couldn’t do it. He said to himself and to his friends, he said, "I’m going to divorce her privately, I’m not going to embarrass her." Why? Because he still loved her. But he knew he could not cohabitate with her. He knew that I just can’t be a husband to her, but I can’t embarrass her and hurt her either. I can’t be vindictive; I can’t get even. So we see this man, a righteous man, but a very tender-hearted, a very kind-hearted man.

Now the other part of the holy family was Mary. As you see in point two under A, you can put a circle around the word Mary, the name Mary. Now Mary was a virgin maiden pledged—in the NIV, the word pledged—to be married to Joseph. But in the King James, the authorized version, it says betrothed.

It was so much different in the old Hebrew way. It was old, but it was beautiful. When a person became engaged, they became betrothed; they stood before witnesses just exactly very much like a wedding ceremony. And they took vows, and there were witnesses, there were papers to be signed, there were documents. That was a contract. You just didn’t kiss and run, you know? This was the real thing; this was the contract.

And then a date was set for the husband to come and to take his wife. So when Mary and Joseph made their vows before witnesses and the legal part, the recording part, the signing of papers were done, then Joseph set a date and he said, "On this date I will come and receive you from your parents' home to my home."

And so on that particular date, I don't know whether it was days or weeks or months, but when the time came to consummate the marriage, Joseph went to the home of the parents of Mary. Mary had all of her trunks packed and suitcases and everything was ready. And on that day, family, you have a big family reunion; all the family members would come, all the people and all the neighbors would come. There would be singing and celebration and musical instruments playing and dancing and praises to God.

See, the marriage ceremony, the legal part was over. Now it’s just the celebration. Now’s the day of consummation of the marriage, and he would go home now with his wife, Joseph would. But between the time they took the vows and became betrothed to each other and the time he went, somewhere he thought Mary secretly had an affair with somebody, and now she’s pregnant, and she tells me this ridiculous story.

Now he loves this girl very much, but he just cannot be a husband to her. He knew that in his heart. But this man was a very compassionate man. Now Mary was the chosen one. She took a great risk, but God came first, and she’s going to obey God. The angel came and made the announcement, Mary asked some questions, and it’s all right sometimes to question some things and to seek for truth, and she sought for truth. And when she finally was convinced in her heart, she said, "Behold the handmaiden of the Lord, I’ll do it, I’ll be the mother of the Savior." And she submitted, and when she did, she was possessed with the Holy Spirit at that moment.

Now this is a divine mystery. Nobody on earth can explain it. We meditate in solemn silence because we don’t know. We don’t know because this was divine and this was of God, this act between the angel and between Mary.

Jack Morris: Give Him the name Jesus. The name Jesus means Yahweh is salvation, or Jehovah is salvation, or we may even bring it more closely into the English: the Lord is salvation. The shorter version of Jesus means the Lord saves. He came to save us, to redeem us and to bring us into the Kingdom of God.

That name, born in heaven, that name conceived in the mind of Almighty God. God spoke to the angels and said, "Take this name, go down there to a virgin maiden and tell her that which is conceived in her is of God, it’s divine, and when that little boy is born, call him Jesus," meaning his name is salvation.

This little fellow running around, what’s his name? Salvation. Here he is. He’s salvation. Three years old. Salvation. Four years old. We’re going to have a birthday party for salvation. Five years old. He went to the school, the Sabbath school in Nazareth, and he was Yahweh’s salvation. His name was Jesus; they called him Jesus.

He went to the synagogue and worshiped, he grew up among friends and family, worked in the carpenter shop. Call him Jesus. When he was 30 years old or thereabouts, he went down to the river Jordan and John the Baptist, his first cousin, baptized him. "Jesus, I baptize you in the name of the God of Israel whose God I am, I serve, and who belongs to me and who belongs to you, the God who possesses you. I baptize you into his name."

Call him Jesus. When his ministry began to flow in the countryside and there were people blessed and people healed, they called him Jesus. His name became more and more reverent, more and more popular, more and more known. Sick people called him Jesus and they were healed. Sinners called him Jesus and their sins were forgiven. The disciples called him Jesus with great love and affection. And when Jesus came into the presence of the demon-possessed, they knew he was Jesus and they trembled.

Thou shalt call his name Jesus. And then the day came when he walked the streets of Jerusalem bearing a cross with a placard on the cross all the way to Golgotha, and over that cross was "Jesus of Nazareth, King of the Jews." Call him Jesus. This is why he came; this is his purpose. He’s Jesus, he’s the salvation of the Lord and you’re lost, you’re lost, you’re lost until you know Jesus of Nazareth who is the salvation of the Lord, who becomes your salvation and my salvation.

And he died and they took him down from the cross and they put him in the tomb, and they rolled the stone. And he descends into Hades. It’s Jesus in hell experiencing what you and I should experience. But he goes down there to tell them of the salvation of Jehovah and to bring forth those who were held in chains of darkness, who died in the faith, who were caught in a place called Paradise. He lifts Paradise out of that place called Hades and puts it into the presence of God. Who does all this?

Long before you were born, he was doing great and mighty things preparing to redeem a human race. He was the Joshua of the New Testament. He wasn’t bringing you into a land of geography, but he was bringing you into the Promised Land, into the very Kingdom of God. We couldn’t fight this war, but Jesus—call him Jesus. The third day he rose again, and for 40 days he appeared to the disciples, and they called him Jesus before the resurrection, they called him Jesus after the resurrection.

And at the end of 40 days, he took them out to the Mount of Olives, and there he ascended back into heaven. And angels witnessed him going up, angels witnessed him coming down. Now angels are escorting him back to heaven, and the angels took him and escorted him to the very right hand of God, to the very throne of God, and he’s seated upon the right hand of God and his name is still what? His name is Jesus. Call him Jesus.

The Father looks at his right hand, and the Father says, "I gave you that name for them. For them. You are their salvation." And do you know what? Listen to me, dear Christian: He’s coming again. And when He comes again, He is coming as Jesus, your salvation. He will be Jesus to those who are alive, He will be Jesus to those who are caught up and changed in the twinkling of an eye, He will be Jesus to those who are dead in the grave. They will hear His voice and at the voice they will know it’s Jesus. Your dead loved ones will recognize His voice because they are still His sheep, and His sheep know His voice and they will come forth to meet Jesus. Call Him Jesus.

For call Him Jesus. And when He comes, the Bible says every knee will bow and every tongue will confess. Who are they bowing to? Who are they confessing to? Jesus. It’s Jesus. The Almighty Father, our Heavenly Father, told that virgin and her betrothed, "Call Him Jesus." Now why? Why call him Jesus? Look at verse 21. Because, well because why? Look at verse 21. Because he will save his people from their sins.

That’s why. That’s the because. That’s the answer to the because. He, not another, but Jesus. You see, you can’t get into the Kingdom of God any other way. You’ve got to follow your Joshua, your warrior Savior. He will take you in. You don’t fight the battle. He has already fought the battle at Calvary and he arose on resurrection morning to let us know that he won the battle, that he triumphed.

It’s he, it’s Jesus. It’s not your church membership, it’s not your good works, it’s not your giving to the poor, it’s not your philanthropy. It’s he, he, he, Jesus. Not you, but Jesus. So what can I do to be saved? Believe on the Lord Jesus Christ. Thou shalt call his name Jesus. He, he will save his people from their sin.

Now that word "will," that’s a strong word. That’s a decree of determination. That’s a decree that carries with it power and authority. When a person wills and says "I will," we run by that word so quickly. Okay, I’ll be there, I’ll be on time, I’ll be there. But he, because he will with power, with authority, with omnipotence, he will do something for you in almightiness to redeem you.

He will what? What will he do? He will save, meaning he’s going to cure the sick, he’s going to cure the sinner, he’s going to forgive sins, he’s going to give people a new beginning, he’s going to give people hope, he’s going to take people out of the shadows, he’s going to bring people into the light. What am I talking about? Exactly what this word says. He will save.

Has he done that for you? Has he brought you out of the shadows? Has he forgiven your sins? Has he brought you into the light? Have you experienced the healing of your soul? He has come to do this. He will save his people. Now there are limits on that statement and there are limits—or limitlessness to that statement.

His people. Not just the people of Israel; yes, those people, but His people, everyone. If you have believed on Him, if you’ve confessed your sins, if you’ve asked Jesus to come into your heart, you are His people, and He will forgive you, He will save you, He will bring you into His kingdom. His people from their sins.

Every wrong thing that we have ever done, every sin we have committed, every disobedient act, He forgives, He forgives, He has a great heart. His heart is filled with love and forgiveness. He came and paid the price. Now this gift that He gives to you and me, it’s a gift that won’t wear out. It won’t wear down. You’ll never have to discard it. It’s new life in Jesus; it’s abundant life in Christ. It’s yours for time; it’s yours for eternity.

You see, love never ends, and you are loved with a never-ending love. Are you His people? See, He’s done His part. The choice now remains with you and me. He came. Call Him Jesus. He shall save His people from their sins. In just a moment we’re going to bow, and I want you to think of you and your life, what you need to confess, turn away from. He will come and bring you out of the shadows today. Shall we bow before Him?

In God’s Wonders Made Visible, Pastor Jack Morris reflects on John chapter 9, where Jesus notices a man who has been blind from birth. This wasn’t a recent hardship; it had shaped the man’s entire life. He didn’t ask for help, and he didn’t draw attention to himself.

But Jesus saw him, and He chose that long-standing need as the place where God’s work would be made visible.
