Spiritual Disciplines: What's Biblical, What's Not

August 23, 2010
“This book of the law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do according to all that is written in it; for then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have success” (Joshua 1:8). Last week we discussed the importance of discipline in the Christian life as it relates to becoming more like Jesus Christ (Romans 8:28). We looked at some obvious examples where 21st Century American Christians lack discipline: studying God’s Word, physical health, the restraint of lust and the tongue. We then talked about some practical ways to “discipline [ourselves] for the purpose of godliness” (1 Timothy 4:7). This week on The Christian Worldview, Ken Silva, pastor of Connecticut River Baptist Church in New Hampshire and editor of Apprising Ministries, one of the most visited “religious” blogs on the Internet, will join us to shed light on certain “spiritual disciplines” or “spiritual formations” -- such as “contemplative or centering prayer” -- which are unbiblical, rooted in mysticism, and lead one towards an experiential, subjective faith. Ken will go beyond helping us steer clear of the practices and proponents of these seductive teachings; he will also give us a biblical framework for understanding what the Bible means when it calls us to be disciplined for the purpose of godliness in such things as prayer, meditation, worship, fasting, and much more.

When Culture Hates You by Natasha Crain

As cultural hostility toward Christianity intensifies, many Christians have grown more reluctant to advocate for biblical values in the public square. But our perseverance for the common good—a good defined by God alone—is more important than ever in a culture that embraces darkness.
