Look, a righteous king is coming! And honest princes will rule under him. He will shelter Israel from the storm and the wind. He will refresh her as a river in the desert and as the cool shadow of a large rock in a hot and weary land. - Isaiah 32:1-2

This passage is an oracle about the coming King. It speaks of his own qualities given by the Spirit of the Lord, but also speaks of the same Spirit in the character of the King’s subjects.

If the King be king of my life, then I shall be a shelter from the wind. In his strength, I can stand in the middle and be a shelter for those who need to get out of the storm for a while.

Do you know anybody against whom the stormy gales of adversity are raging? Do you have a friend who needs you to be her shelter for awhile against the howling winds that rage around her? I think of a friend whose husband will not speak to her. Her children are hostile. She knows and loves the Lord, but she lives alone in a house full of strangers who have but one thing in common—their name.

Since no one speaks to her, she desperately needs someone to talk to. When we meet each other, we stop to chat or take time out for a cup of coffee. Occasionally, I meet her husband, and he talks to me. More accurately, he talks at me. Somehow he feels better once he’s unloaded, and he goes home to his wife and asks her to pass the sugar at breakfast! Now, that’s progress, and she calls me to rejoice. I have been a shelter, a windbreak, and I am glad!
