What or Who Do You Worship? Part 2

January 4, 2019

An idol is a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered. Often, our idols aren’t as obvious as worshiping a carved image of a goddess. They are less conspicuous, like compulsive shopping, abusing alcohol, or emotional eating. Or it might be binging on hours of our favorite television show or holding someone in too high regard. As Christians, an idol is looking to anything other than Jesus to meet our every physical, emotional, and spiritual need.

In this message, Pete Briscoe talks openly about letting go and breaking free from our dependence on the idols we keep hidden in our hearts and discovering true contentment that never fades.

We all like “stuff”—the new, the fancy, the expensive, and the flashy. And many of us believe that life is better when we have more possessions. In fact, there are pastors who have falsely taught that if we please God, He’ll bless us with material wealth. But the short-lived excitement we feel with each purchase is fleeting. And soon we’re looking for the next purchase to ignite those feelings again.  In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about our excess stuff that only gets in the way of our finding true and long-lasting contentment in our lives. And he provides an antidote to our over-buying that will glorify God.

Anxiety can be described is a low-grade, ongoing feeling of dread and stress—and is extremely debilitating.  As a result of situations in which we find ourselves in the 21st Century, many people are going through life experiences that are anxiety-producing! The question is: How do we cope? In this message, Stuart Briscoe takes us to Philippians 4, where the apostle Paul—writing from prison—spoke about how rejoicing and thanks-giving lead to an understanding of the inner peace of God. Learning to live in and experience the presence of His peace offers the answer to our anxiety.

When you come to familiar Scriptures, do you tend to pass them by? Most of us have heard Psalm 23, describing the shepherd’s relationship with his sheep. Take time and allow the Lord to give you a fresh revelation on these verses as Jill Briscoe shares her heart and perspective on one of her favorite passages in Scripture.

Christmas is over. Boxes, wrapping paper, and bows are what remain. And now we have the familiar problem of trying to find a place for all of our new gifts. So often, our homes become packed full of stuff. We need to clean out and give to those who are less fortunate. In this message, Pete explores the book of Ruth to explain how we can reach out to those in need.

John concludes his Prologue by calling Jesus “the One and only” to show us His uniqueness. If we are convinced that John is right about Jesus, the question arises: What are the ramifications of the Word becoming flesh? So what? Now what?

We have learned how to send people to the moon—and get them back again. But we have not succeded in solving many of the pressing problems on earth. Many despair that we ever will. So the news that God visited our planet to put matters right is exciting. Or is it?

For centuries, the prophets had promised and predicted the Incarnation. John the Baptist was the last in this distinguished line and he was an unerring pointer to Christ and His ministry. He “came as a witness” (v.7) to prepare the people to welcome the Visitor.

Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
