The Meaning of Love, Part 1

March 26, 2019

We read in I Corinthians 13 a clear and complete description of love. This is the type of love our world is craving. The problem is we are so confused on the subject of love, which of course, is at the root of any kind of relationship, and particularly, any kind of friendship. We need to define the word, identify the various types, explore the source, and understand the meaning of love.

Envy is something many of us struggle with, especially in today’s culture. The problem is that all too soon envy of what someone owns or has accomplished morphs into jealousy where we don’t want them to have or enjoy what they have! How do we stop this comparative and unhealthy thinking that’s harmful to us and prevents us from loving people in a pure and Godly manner? In this message, Jill Briscoe gives practical insight to help free us from the burden of want and instead rejoice in the triumphs of others.

We’re often tempted to live our lives out of our emotions where ugly things like frustration, anger, jealousy, and impatience rise to the surface. But love is patient. Love wins over difficult people. Love wins over unlovable people. But it’s never something we can do in our own strength. In this message, Jill Briscoe explores patience as an outpouring of love and why allowing God to teach us long-suffering will transform the gift of love we give to others into a kindness the world seldom sees.

If you look behind the conflicts, arguments, and unresolved disputes in your marriage you’ll likely find the root problem is that you and your spouse are fighting for control. The human quest for control is nothing new—it’s been plaguing relationships since the beginning of time. And the tension that results from guarding your turf prevents your marriage from flourishing. In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about how our need for control is really just a symptom of something deeper. He discusses what it takes to erase the boundaries of our individual kingdoms in order to enjoy the oneness that God intended for our marriages.

What’s the secret to a sustained, successful marriage? As Stuart Briscoe often answers, “Keep your promises and live a long time.” That, of course, begs the question: What’s the secret to keeping your promises? In this message from Mark 10, Stuart draws our attention to the biblical foundations of marriage—and how honoring God’s good design can encourage spouses toward a lifetime of love and faithfulness.

If you’re asking this question it’s likely that you’ve gone through an intensely personal and emotional hardship. As you heal and put the pieces of your life back in place, you might be struggling to know whether you’ll ever love and marry again.  Or, maybe you’ve remarried after a divorce but now wonder if your decision was in line with God’s Word. The Bible does place restrictions on who can get remarried. But there’s often confusion around the passages and various positions as a result. In this message, Pete Briscoe unveils what the Bible says on this topic to help you gain understanding and confidently know the answer for your situation.

There’s nothing natural about sitting in a room with someone you hardly know and being asked probing questions about your most personal feelings, fears, and struggles. And if that’s not enough to deter you, there’s also a negative stigma attached to people who seek counseling. So, why even bother? After all, Christians seek counsel from God and each other—isn’t that enough? It might not be if you’re feeling stuck in life—lost in a dying marriage or relationship, held hostage from a traumatic past event, or self-medicating to relieve your pain. Sometimes we need help to admit that we need help. In this message, Pete Briscoe will show you biblically the appropriateness and importance of seeking counsel, so that nothing holds you back from fully experiencing Life in Christ.

You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
