Telling the Truth

Stuart and Jill Briscoe

The Father-ness of God

February 7, 2018

A bewildered human race is like a man lost in a forest asking, "Father, are you there?" In 1945, at the end of World War 2, Helmut Thielicke, a brilliant theologian, preaching through the Lord's Prayer to what was left of his congregation in the ruins of his church in Stuttgart said, "Everything will be all right so long as we hear His good voice calling to us above the howling of the wolves, above the sound of branches snapping, above the ominous noises around us. God is always there."

A Christian worldview believes in the Fatherhood of God.

In the midst of so much international and interpersonal turmoil, it is easy to wonder: Why is it like this? What is God doing? How can I possibly carry on in this chaotic world? These questions, incredibly pertinent today, were also asked by the psalmist of Israel several thousand years ago.  In his message "Keep Calm and Carry On," Stuart Briscoe remembers life in World War II era Britain, and he uses Psalm 2 to confront the fear caused by the distressing circumstances of our current world with the sovereign plan of our mighty and holy God.

In this world there’s no shortage of grounds for doubts and fears, and Christians are not exempt. It is important as believers that we be people who know what we know, believe what we believe, and are confident in the things that we ought to be confident in.

In its early days, the Christian church was very conscious of the struggle for the souls of men and women between “the Spirit of truth and the spirit of falsehood.” In our modern culture, we see dramatically changing attitudes toward truth. But we must recognize that there is such a thing as truth, and there is such a thing as error.

Love is a common theme of both Christian and secular thought and interest. Because of this, Christians need to be careful to understand the uniqueness of the love that characterizes the children of God - what it is, what it does, and what it says about who we are in Christ.

In us there is a well of water that continually quenches our thirst. It is the Holy Spirit that flows like a stream in our hearts. When we call on Him, the river overflows and refreshes our souls, enabling us to do God’s work without getting burnt out.

In the Scriptures, oil is used as a symbol of joy and gladness. And we as Christians have a little pot of oil in us that will never run dry. The Holy Spirit is the oil in our lamps that keeps us burning, allowing us to be a light in this dark world.

About Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Stuart Briscoe uses wit and intellect to target your heart, capture your attention and challenge you to grow! You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
