Telling the Truth

Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Saints Who Sin, Part 2

November 6, 2020

How could a perfect God possibly empathize with a sinful person? If you believe your sin is too much for Jesus to forgive, that He is angry at you and separates Himself from you every time you mess up, then you don’t know Him.
How will Jesus receive you when we have erred, and how should you receive others who sin? In this message, Pete Briscoe details why it’s possible for you to stop hiding from Jesus and instead approach Him with confidence and boldness.

References: Hebrews 5:1-10

The author of Hebrews addresses a struggle for early Jewish believers. They had difficulty focusing their eyes on Jesus because they couldn’t see past their hero, Moses. It’s understandable. They knew that Moses had the privilege of meeting with God face-to-face in the temple. In this message, Pete Briscoe points us beyond the temple as the meeting place with God to the indwelling Christ, where we have the privilege of meeting with Him anywhere and anytime.

After we sin, we can feel a bit grimy. Our sin sticks to us like dirt, and we can have an itching desire to scrub ourselves clean. Some of us confess to a priest to be made clean – others talk directly to Jesus. But in either case, many of us were made to believe we must confess every sin – no matter how large or small – in order to receive Christ's forgiveness. In this message based on 1 John 1:5-10, Pete Briscoe shakes things up by asking whether John is talking to believers in this text, or to people pretending to be believers? Knowing which you are makes all the difference in understanding the forgiveness of your sins – past, present, and future.

Christians who seek to live lives worthy of their high calling are aware that they are involved in a struggle. They need to be clear about the unique nature of the struggle and the way in which God plans for them to stand firm against the enemy and to win the victory.

Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.
