Living Above the Circumstances

January 29, 2019

Does anyone ever ask, “How are you?” and you reply, “Well, under the circumstances....” The problem is that’s exactly where we are living—under the circumstances! How do we rise above the adversity and sing a song of praise? From the Old Testament book of 1 Samuel, Jill Briscoe shows us how Hannah, under very difficult circumstances, found the secret.

John 15 tells us that we’re abiding in Christ when we’re living in Him and He’s living in us. And then goes on to explain that it’s through our abiding in Christ that we will bear much fruit and prove to be His disciples. What do disciples of Jesus Christ do? The great commission from Jesus is for us to “Go therefore and make disciples…” (Matthew 28:19). So, how are you doing making disciples? For many of us, just the idea makes us tongue-tied and our palms sweat. Why do we get flustered over the idea of making disciples for Jesus, whom we love and trust?  Maybe it’s because we’ve made it more difficult and complicated than it actually is. In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from John 2 and John 15 to show how simple, rich, deep, and beautiful abiding is, and what bearing fruit looks like in the life of a disciple who is abiding in Jesus.

Do you ever doubt yourself—thinking you’re the worst team player, the worst speaker, or maybe the worst sinner among professing Christians?  What you believe about yourself determines how you see yourself. So, if you think you’re the worst sinner, you’ll start to see yourself as dirty, or as a liar, or as unfaithful, or whatever. But Scripture says in Colossians 1:22, “But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation…” Even if you don’t feel holy and without blemish, this is how God sees you! Do you believe it? If His view of you doesn’t match how you see yourself, who has the right view of you?  In this message, Pete Briscoe helps you sort through this identity conflict so you can find contentment and satisfaction in knowing who you truly are in Christ.

Robert Burns, the Scottish poet, wrote, “Oh that God the gift would give us, to see ourselves as others see us.” This can be helpful—and devastating! But what really matters is that we see ourselves from the divine perspective. This view yields a true self image!

The orientation of much modern spirituality is inward. That of Christian spirituality is upward and outward. Not that the inward is neglected but it requires a focus on “things above” to motivate and empower us to discipline what we find within ourselves.

It is generally agreed that the Western world is in need of spiritual revival. Historically, cultures have been revived when the church has been renewed. But the church is renewed one believer at a time. So let us pursue personal renewal beginning with a renewed focus.

There’s a conflict that happens inside of us regarding how we choose to live. We either live in our flesh or by the Spirit. The choice is ours, and it’s a choice that we might make numerous times every day. As Christians, we are to live by the Spirit. But how do we do that? What does it look like to walk by the Spirit—and just as important—what does it look like when we’re not walking by the Spirit? In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Galatians 5:16 to deepen our understanding of what it means to live a life that overcomes our fleshly desires, aligns with the Holy Spirit, and is completely dependent on Jesus.

Is your heart asking, “How long, O Lord”? Who or what are you waiting for? A job? A friend to be a friend? Someone to love you or for you to love back? Are you waiting for a break—or a baby? A child to say they’re sorry, reconciliation, or an important prayer to be answered? Maybe you’re waiting for the bullying or betrayal to stop—or lying, hating, injustice, corruption, or hurt. Or perhaps you are in a crisis of faith that needs to be resolved. In this message from Habakkuk, Jill Briscoe offers encouragement for the tough times in life.
