Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Intimately Loved and Indisputably Forgiven

June 16, 2017

Have you ever wondered why God made a new covenant? It's hard to imagine there was something wrong with the first covenant, because He made it. But in Jeremiah, we read that God found fault with the people. Despite His tender love for them, the people were incapable of living obediently to the law. In this message, Pete Briscoe shows how the age of law has passed and the age of the Son is here to stay. And with the new covenant, Jesus promises that through Him we are never led astray, we are intimately loved, and we are indisputably forgiven.

The apostle Paul loves to play the "greater than game" in the book of Hebrews, and he does it skillfully. It's a wonderful way to argue, because once he's established that something is greater, then everything downstream from that thing is greater as well! In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about how Paul uses the "greater than" approach to successfully tackle an equation that is of utmost importance to every believer. The equation of Law versus Jesus.

Now imagine that someone in your family came out as you were unloading your bags and offered to carry them so you could sit down to rest. You probably wouldn't turn them down! One of the best known passages in the Bible is Psalm 23. It describes the relationship between a shepherd and His flock, in which He guides them through pastures, hills and dark valleys. In every case, the sheep are content because the shepherd is there, offering protection and comfort. We are the sheep in this story!  Jill teaches that no matter what is happening in our lives, good or bad, the only way we can find true contentment—and even joy—in every situation is by trusting in the Lord, our shepherd, who promises to never leave us.

The Colossian Christians were being troubled by people who were confusing them and hindering their spiritual progress. Paul spoke forcibly to the issue and in so doing he reminds us that we should be on our guard against those who would be less than helpful to our spiritual lives.

Having begun their spiritual journey, the Colossians needed encouragement to continue as they had started because factors entered their lives that would take them off course.
