How to Face a New Year, Part 1

January 1, 2018

Where did the time go?

Most of us have asked this question at some point in our lives. The end of a year and the beginning of a new year confront us with the passage of time. We know time is limited and we know it is a gift, but we do not always know what to do with it. Stuart Briscoe walks us through the book of Ecclesiastes to explore this issue, embrace the times and seasons of life, and experience Life to the full.

We learn in Scripture how God wrestled Jacob to the ground one night and turned him upside down - so he could live right-side up. Jacob became a "prince" with God instead of a pain. When we're suffering the consequences of our own poor choices; when we're bearing the brunt of someone's vengeance and anger; when we feel absolutely on our own and life is not working out as planned, that's when God will turn up. He wants to walk down the stairway of heaven right into our hearts to make us aware of His personal interest and concern.

A casual reading of the parable of the widow and the judge might suggest that Jesus was saying if we go on asking God to do what we want, He will give in eventually and we will get our own way!  A careful study of Luke 18:1-14 presents a very different picture.

Christmas is over. Boxes, wrapping paper, and bows are what remain. And now we have the familiar problem of trying to find a place for all of our new gifts. So often, our homes become packed full of stuff. We need to clean out and give to those who are less fortunate. In this message, Pete explores the book of Ruth to explain how we can reach out to those in need.

When Jesus becomes our Lord He has deciding power in our lives. Therefore, we have no reason to fear because Jesus is who He says He is and will do what He said He’ll do.

In Luke 2:10, a message from the angel of the Lord was revealed: We have no reason to fear because Jesus brings us the Good News. God chose you, so you’re wanted. God loves you, so you’re cherished. He’s redeemed you, so you’re free. He’s forgiven you, so you’re clean. He’s included you, so everything that is true of Him is true of you. And He has given you the Spirit—so nothing will ever change those facts. They will be true from now through eternity.

Are you a fearful person? Are there circumstances in your life that make you anxious? There’s plenty of evidence that worry and anxiety take a toll on us physically and emotionally, but often the experts’ solutions only deal with surface symptoms. Meanwhile, God tells us: “Do not be afraid!” So how do we do it? Pete dives into Luke 2:8-10 to reiterate that no matter who you are or what might be weighing you down, there is a place you can find relief from your burdens.

“That though he was rich, yet for your sakes he became poor, so that you through his poverty might become rich.” 2 Corinthians 8:9 There are over 350 prophesies in the Old Testament that describe the Messiah. Jesus, born with no fanfare or even a crib, fulfilled every single one! The mathematical odds of that are virtually impossible. And yet, even with that knowledge, the question about Jesus is ultimately a personal one you have to decide on your own. Who do you think the baby Jesus was? In this message from Jill, she asks you this very question. If you believe the baby Jesus is God, you will live your life with a different perspective and purpose.

When Jesus’ listeners heard Him announce that He had come into the world in order that they might have life, they must have recognized immediately that He was obviously not referring to physical existence. But they had no idea what He did mean (vs. 6). Do we?
