How Disciples Pray, Part 1

September 10, 2018

Prayer is an essential part of the Christian life. Jesus made that clear throughout His ministry, as He both actively participated in it and frequently talked about it with His disciples.

But how exactly should we pray? And will God even answer?

In this message, Stuart Briscoe walks you through the Lord’s Prayer in the Sermon on the Mount to explain how to pray and what to pray. This message will give you the confidence you need to step into a vibrant life of prayer and intimacy with Jesus.

If you only talked to your spouse for a minute or two a few times a week, what would your relationship be like?  Disconnected?  Distant?  A lot of us have a prayer life like that.  We don’t spend much time in conversation with God, and when we make the effort, we do all the talking! One of the things that matters most to Jesus is our personal relationship with Him.  He offers the human race an incredible invitation. He says, “Let’s talk.”  What does this mean?  It involves listening to His Word and responding in prayer. In this message, Jill Briscoe gives you a vivid picture of the intimacy you’ll experience when you carve out time to connect with God.

When was the last time you stole away to a quiet, secluded place to pray? Chances are it’s been a while. But quiet time is essential for any thriving relationship. Jesus craved alone time with the Father, so He often withdrew from the crowds and disciples to spend time in prayer. How will your relationship with God thrive if you answer Jesus’ prompting to steal away with Him?

Having explained what God was doing in his life and wanted to do in the Ephesians lives, Paul turned to prayer. His concern was that they would discover and experience all that God had in mind for their spiritual growth and development. We need similar concerns today.

In the first century, many believers were slaves or slave owners. How they conducted themselves in these capacities was vitally important. Our situation is different, but our work habits and relationships are no less significant; half of our waking hours are spent there!

The one thing we need is sometimes the one thing we lack. We need tickets to a sold-out event, a higher test score, or even a hand to help us when we’re drowning. The problem is the one thing we need is the one thing we lack. And often, we need someone else to help us get what we’re lacking. In regards to our salvation, Jesus has the one thing we lack, and He wants to give it to us. We are completely incapable of salvation on our own, but Christ came to provide what we need. Say “yes” to Him, and receive what He has. He’s the only way.

Have you ever tried to use a currency other than the dollar in the United States? It didn’t work, did it? Trying to use a different currency is similar to trying to gain salvation through works, giving, volunteering, or just being a nice person. It won’t work. You can’t gain salvation through your own means. In this message, Pete shares what the Bible says the Kingdom-currency really is. It’s unique, and in complete faith and trust, it’s available to us now.

Silent, but deadly. Sounds like a big deal, right? That’s exactly why Christians make a big deal out of sin—it’s a silent killer. And not only that, but we all have it. So how do we deal with this silent killer? What difference can we make? As Christians, we not only know sin to be deadly, but we know the cure! We know only the grace Jesus offers can counteract sin’s deadly consequence. We are called to both expose the disease and introduce others to its cure.
