Stuart and Jill Briscoe

Embracing Freedom, Part 2

January 10, 2019

Have you ever listened to people talk about their walk with Christ and find yourself wondering how they do it? It seems to be “working” for them, they seem full of confidence and peace, but your walk feels challenging and bumpy.

Why do they seem to be living in freedom while you feel chained? What do they know about Christ that you don’t know?

In this message, Pete Briscoe teaches from Galatians 2:20 to show you how to break free from carrying the burdens you weren’t meant to carry and live instead the adventurous and abundant life that Christ has called you to!

I believe in Jesus, but for so long I've been spiritually dry. I made a mistake. A bad mistake! And since then, I've been living in a desert of regrets in a dry and barren land… thirsty, thirsty, thirsty. It’s been a long time since I’ve experienced a sense of the supernatural. I feel isolated, marginalized, full of self-doubt—a failure! If this sounds like you, Jill Briscoe offers help in her message based on the life of Moses.

We often ask, “Where is God? I look for Him, but I do not see Him. I listen for Him, but I do not hear Him. It is dark—so very dark. Not pitch black perhaps, but my life is lived in shadows. How can I find God in the shadows?” In this message, Jill Briscoe looks at the life of Esther to uncover answers to those questions.

An idol is a person or thing that is greatly admired, loved, or revered. Often, our idols aren’t as obvious as worshiping a carved image of a goddess. They are less conspicuous, like compulsive shopping, abusing alcohol, or emotional eating. Or it might be binging on hours of our favorite television show or holding someone in too high regard. As Christians, an idol is looking to anything other than Jesus to meet our every physical, emotional, and spiritual need.  In this message, Pete Briscoe talks openly about letting go and breaking free from our dependence on the idols we keep hidden in our hearts and discovering true contentment that never fades.

We all like “stuff”—the new, the fancy, the expensive, and the flashy. And many of us believe that life is better when we have more possessions. In fact, there are pastors who have falsely taught that if we please God, He’ll bless us with material wealth. But the short-lived excitement we feel with each purchase is fleeting. And soon we’re looking for the next purchase to ignite those feelings again.  In this message, Pete Briscoe talks about our excess stuff that only gets in the way of our finding true and long-lasting contentment in our lives. And he provides an antidote to our over-buying that will glorify God.

Anxiety can be described is a low-grade, ongoing feeling of dread and stress—and is extremely debilitating.  As a result of situations in which we find ourselves in the 21st Century, many people are going through life experiences that are anxiety-producing! The question is: How do we cope? In this message, Stuart Briscoe takes us to Philippians 4, where the apostle Paul—writing from prison—spoke about how rejoicing and thanks-giving lead to an understanding of the inner peace of God. Learning to live in and experience the presence of His peace offers the answer to our anxiety.

When you come to familiar Scriptures, do you tend to pass them by? Most of us have heard Psalm 23, describing the shepherd’s relationship with his sheep. Take time and allow the Lord to give you a fresh revelation on these verses as Jill Briscoe shares her heart and perspective on one of her favorite passages in Scripture.

Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
