Effective Where You Are, Part 1

August 24, 2020

Before we knew Jesus, we were living among the dead. But after Jesus gets a hold of us, we are alive, and our life is transformed anew! But what will Jesus do with our new life?

We may expect an extravagant calling—maybe to an unreached village abroad or to the alleys of an inner city. However, Jesus calls us to a place that may surprise us. What will Jesus do in us as we take Jesus to our most personal mission field?

We tend to believe the lie that the worse your sin is, the less eligible for redemption you are. Are you struggling to accept Christ’s redemption because of your sin? When we feel beyond God’s redemption, Jesus has good news for us. In this message, Pete Briscoe encourages us to remember that our sin actually makes us eligible for redemption. Sin is what makes redemption necessary!

We may say racism is a thing of the past, but, in many ways, it still infects the body of Christ. And just as a diseased body needs treatment until it’s completely healed, we shouldn’t stop treating racism in Christ’s Body. Jesus went towards those who were different than Him, and He instructs us to do the same. How are you allowing Christ to love all others through you? And what are you doing to treat the disease in the Body?

Enemies. We’ve all got them. They irritate us, hurt us, and bring out the worst in us. But as a new creation in Christ, what do you do with your enemies? Jesus assumed we’d have enemies, and His direction to us is blatant, but it’s an action only possible through Him.

The Church is called to love a world of rule-breakers. But are we rule-keepers unable to love the rule-breakers? Jesus’ way of loving rule-breakers may shock us. In this message, Pete explores how Jesus can love them through us.

Are you a messy person? The truth is we are all messy people living in a messy world. Sometimes we attempt to camouflage the clutter of our lives instead of dealing with it. Ever wonder what Jesus might think of our messy lives? Thankfully, He sees beyond our junk and isn’t concerned about us transforming into tidy people. In this message Pete talks about how Jesus came to to give us Life—life to the full!

When was the last time you stole away to a quiet, secluded place to pray? Chances are it’s been a while. But quiet time is essential for any thriving relationship. Jesus craved alone time with the Father, so He often withdrew from the crowds and disciples to spend time in prayer. How will your relationship with God thrive if you answer Jesus’ prompting to steal away with Him?

We have a primary calling in life to be a child of God, but we all have a secondary calling as well. This secondary calling is a personal one to be an instrument in God’s work. But how do we know what that personal calling is? It takes an invitation. In this message, Pete shares an unexpected way the invitation may arrive.

You will find his logic compelling as he brings a fresh, practical perspective to the Scriptures. Born in England, Stuart left a career in banking to enter the ministry full time. He has written more than 50 books, received three honorary doctorates and preached in more than one hundred countries. He was senior pastor of Elmbrook Church in Brookfield, Wisconsin, for thirty years, and currently serves as minister-at-large.

Jill Briscoe was born in England and found Christ when she was 18 years old. She never looked back. Upon graduating from Cambridge University, she began working as a teacher by day and had a vigorous street ministry to the youths of Liverpool by night.

She met Stuart at a youth conference and they married in 1958. In the 50 years since, Jill has become a highly sought-after Bible teacher and author who travels around the world ministering to under-resourced churches and speaking at international seminars and conferences. Since 2000, she and Stuart, who was formerly senior pastor of Elmbrook Church for 30 years, have had the joy of equipping and encouraging believers across the globe in their roles as ministers-at-large for Elmbrook.

Jill has authored more than 40 books including devotionals, study guides, poetry and children's books. Her vivid, relational teaching style touches the emotions and stirs the heart. She serves as Executive Editor of Just Between Us, a magazine of encouragement for ministry wives and women in leadership, and served on the board of World Relief and Christianity Today, Inc., for over 20 years.

Jill and Stuart call suburban Milwaukee, Wisconsin their home. When they are not traveling, they spend time with their three children, David, Judy and Peter, and thirteen grandchildren.
