Works of the Flesh, Part 3

Jesus said in His sermon on the mount, "The eye is the lamp of the body. If your eyes are healthy, your whole body will be full of light." It's amazing how our mind is easily corrupted when evil images get in. These images imprint and affect our hearts. The flesh is an enemy that the Christian must deal with in order to survivie. Thankfully we are not alone, because we have the Holy Spirit to aid us in our war against the Works of the Flesh.

The 16th century mathematician Charles Bovillus said, "Many wild beasts lie lurking under the skin of man." This statement seen in light of Galatians 5 is spot on. The flesh is a terrible enemy that has a ferocious appetite. It's very important for the Christian to understand their enemy. The world today thinks they have love and freedom. But the worlds love is selfish, and creates bondage to sin. What the world needs is love, not like the love from the old hit song from the 60’s, but God's Agape Love. God's love is selfless and never runs out. James 3 says, “My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.” And Revelation 22:19 says, If anyone takes away from the words of the book of this prophecy, God shall take away his part from the book of Life.” These verses are both sobering and alarming. God is paying close attention to the things being taught in the pulpit. The Apostle Paul had to confront those who distorted Gods truth. The Protestant theologian Frances Schaeffer is quoted saying, “The Truth demands confrontation; loving confrontation, but confrontation nevertheless.” The Apostle Paul is confronting the legalism that has infiltrated the regional churches of Galatia. He is fighting against those who would pervert the Gospel of Grace with the works of the Law. Pastor Jeff is in Galatians 5 with the second half of Confronting Legalism.
